    Default Hamilton driving Senna’s car

Did anyone else watch the in car video of Hamilton driving Senna’s car in Brazil? The one thing that JUMPED out at me was that he wasn’t wearing a HANS device! Old car, pouring rain, no paddle shifters….. what could possibly go wrong!

I’m surprised that the powers that be in F1 would allow that, let alone his insurance company. I found it inappropriate for a hero to many to disregard safety gear.

    Default Hans

I wear a HANS, have so since before they were required, and have a customer that I am positive had his life saved by one. That said, sometimes you cannot wear one without significant modifications of the car. That car was supposed to stay original I am sure. Do you have a link to the demo?.

The clip is on the Formula1.com site.

it is possible that the belts don’t fit the HANS, but a simple fabricated bracket could allow it to fit. As we all know, it doesn’t take much force to cause a basilar skull fracture. I’m also positive a team could make something work.

I also know a personal friend who no doubt would have died without his.

    Default Hamilton in Senna's car

Beyond the Hans device, it was a pleasure to see a real race car with real racecar sound on the track in Brazil. F1 has gotten too weird with all of the technology and if the 26 rules go into effect as written will be even worse. Glad I'm old!

First, I love that Hamilton got to do this. I'm only sorry the track was wet so that he had to drive it that slowly.

Second, what happened to being adults and deciding what risks we are willing to take?

I wear a NecksGen when I race, and even if the rules didn't require it, I'd probably have chosen to use one anyway.

    But let's be honest:

The only person who is at risk if he or she chooses NOT to wear one is the wearer. It doesn't make any other person racing with him or her any safer.

If Lewis Hamilton wants to drive Ayrton Senna's McLaren badly enough that he's willing to do so without a HANS…

    …that's his call.

I'm sure he was instructed to take it easy and he wouldn't want to push such a car anyway. I did notice very quickly that he did not have a HANS, but didn't feel it was a problem.
