The Field takes shape for Gp of Road Atlanta
From Pawleys Island,SC July 24,2018- The grid takes shape for this weekends event sponsored by Gridsport.net and the excitement builds as this prestigious event is bringing out some of the top quality drivers in both F2000 and f1600 as part of rounds 7 and 8 of the www.southernformulacar.com year long championship. The series consist of 5-6 weekends of racing run in conjunction with SCCA regional races in the southeast division. Gridsport.net has been a long time supporter of many of primus racings events for several years. They are one of the premier driving gear companies based in Indianapolis and operated by Bryan Trager. His company will supply top quality Sparco driving suits to the top 3 in both divisions based on combination of the double race weekend. He will also supply Sparco driving gloves to 4t,5th,and 6th positions in both classes. Judging by the large entry of over 21 cars there are many people that would like to take home one of these beautiful awards.
Primusracingparts.com, the title sponsor of the series is quite thrilled with the participation levels this year and we expect things to keep growing at a rapid rate. This weekends event will feature many of the top drivers in the f1600 class which is sponsored by Hoosier Tires and tires must be purchased through Appalachian race tire to be eligible for points or prize payout. The F2000 class is sponsored by American Racer tires and tires must be purchased through primusracingparts to be eligible for payout.
The championships have done better then expected and without the sponsorship it would not be possible. Other key associate sponsors include Aim electronics, PFC brakes, Speedcom Radios , Taylor Race engineering, OZ racing wheels, Driven race oil, Quartermaster clutches, Aero strait race mirrors, Aurora rod ends, and Quicksilver engines. these fine companies have supplied free products and certificates all season long.
There has been 35 different drivers racing throughout the year and its anybody's guess who will walk away with the year end title. Coming into this weekend many of the regular drivers will have a great chance of winning this weekend but there are certainly first time racers in the series that will have equal chance of pulling off a win. Among the 1600 drivers competing this weekend, here are some of the favorites to grab at least one win during the weekend. John Schimenti has shown great speed all year with wins in Daytona and Sebring. Hartley MacDonald second in points has the speed to win but has had some crazy circumstances taking potential wins away from him. John Benson is certainly a big favorite after taking win at Sebring and running at the front at every event throughout the year. Roelof blok has quietly inched his way into tie for 3rd place in the points and he improves each time out . Douglas stewart running his DB1 honda powered car has also run very strong after missing the opener at Sebring , but has finished in top 3 in every race he has entered so certainly look for him to be charging.
Now we cant overlook first time drivers in the series, which includes Derek Ketchie, this North Carolina driver is always a threat to win, but experienced a huge shunt at Indianapolis and it has taken some time to get the car race ready for this event. Donald Bagget will also make the field and he has hundreds of miles around Road Atlanta, so we expect strong performance from this veteran driver. South Carolina native Chris Smith will also make the trip to show what he can do in this very tough group but expect a hard fought battle from Chris.
The Formula continental championship is also shaping into a great points battle. The Iron man Jim belay is a man on a mission this year. He clawed his way to Daytona after breaking down in his motorhome a few hours from the track. He pulled a MacGyver in the Walmart parking lot and managed to use some bits and pieces out of his miscellaneous tool box to attach the wheel back on the motorhome and rolled in quite late to the track after getting no sleep. Belay was nicknamed Iron man after starting more F2000 races then anyone I know. He and his wife have been mainstays on the Atlanta racing scene since the eighty's and they are what you call true racing enthusiasts. Skip Weld and Chris Scharnow who sit 2nd and 3rd in points have prior commitments so they wont be running in Atlanta so that will open the door for Marc Stern and John Herscher to make up some ground in the points. Herscher is the 2017 champion and he has already taken 1 win this season so both Marc and John will be battling to win this weekend. Bill Herscher will also be running his older 91 car but look for him to be competitive after already finishing 3rd earlier in the year. Chris Dunlap has completed every lap since the beginning and has pulled off some top 3 finishes in the process. Another new driver to the series is Flecher Wulff. he should be fast, the team he runs with has many years of experience with these cars so we look for him to challenge for the lead.
All and all we are looking forward to a great weekend of racing so I hope any potential drivers will find there way to the track for this event or one of our other races throughout the season
Regards, Brad Baytos- President of Southern Formula car Championship
