I have a Vee transaxil that is removed from the car, it has the swing arms tubes and axils removed.
Is there any way with the trans in this condition to tell if it is a long or short box.

Remove the side cover and count teeth. 5 mins off -10 mins on. Quicker than counting revolutions, doing calculations, and having to think.

I do not know how to check with transaxle out,but maybe this will help
Have heard that
Longbox put in 4th gear
1 full turn of wheel = 1 & 300 degrees<approx. 1/4" short of 2 full turns
Shortbox put in 4th gear
1 full turn of wheel = 1 & 345 degrees<approx 1/8" short of 2 full turns.
Back in May 2001 Jim at sracing said that
shortbox
3.8:1 first gear
2.06:2nd
1.22:3rd
0.89:4th
Longbox
0.82:1 4th gear
Also 2 types of 3rdgears, They can be
1.00:1 or 1.26 to 1
mike
Short 4.375
Long 4.125
Actually, there are three 3rd gears legal to use:
- 1.22
- 1.26
- 1.32

Sam:
With the trans on the floor- turn it upside down, remove the drain plug, you wil see the ring gear teeth inside, mark one tooth with chalk or a paint marker, rotate the ring gear and count the teeth.
35 is a short box, 33 is a long box

Don't recall, but just divide the pinion number into the ring gear number. I think the SB is 8:35 and LB is 8:33.

Everyone is correct unless you are looking at a split case trans. They are readily id'd by the fact the cases bolted together. If it is, chances are you do not want to use it in a vee.

Thanks all, I now have a plan to find out what I have
Before doing all thoses things, check to see if the builder labelled it. Look near where it bolts to the engine for something like "VSR LONG 1.22" or "LRE 1.26 SHORT". Might save you some time.
