I just read something that REALLY piqued my interest....
It seems the USF2000 people are considering Standing Starts !
I have only done a few of these in SVRA Vintage races (like a LeMans start), but that certainly adds a twist to their series....

Standing starts on an oval? Airplane like fourth gear, and a standing start first gear.
Maybe with a five speed where you could gear correctly it would work.
other then ovals standing starts would work fine just like they did years ago in the Export A series in Canada. The F2KCS asked about this in the second year , I was the only one who voted yes, go figure.

We (as in the whole zetec series) tried them at a Mid Ohio test in early 2002. It was SUPER difficult to get the zetecs going from a standing start back then. (I had just completed a year in Canada in FF with nothing but standing starts so it wasn't my first go at one)
With that said, the maps have definitely changed since then so it would be interesting to see if they can work now.
The other thing you have to deal with is the fact that the gearboxes are rated for 160 lb/ft of torque. The current map on a Zetec makes 145 lb/ft torque max. Ask Tom Fatur what happened when he dropped the hammer at Mosport in 2008 in the paddock. He spun the input shaft apart if memory serves me correctly. Shock loading these boxes to many times when they are that close to their rated limit might hurt reliability. I don't know what safety factors Hewland uses, but...
