    Default U Joint Clip Trouble

I have a Merlyn Mk 20 and have been struggling with the installation of the final outside clip that holds the needle bearing cup in place. I have tried to alternate cups but the last clip seems impossible to get into the chase in the joint (32nd of an inch). All of the needle bearings are in their proper place in the cups. Any secrets or suggestions before I get out the "short barrel gun"?

many years ago, when I raced a Spitfire, I used two proper sized sockets and and a vice to push the last little bit

The only time we've had that problem is either when a needle has gotten kicked into the cap, which you state hasn't happened, or when the new clip is slightly thicker than the old one.
I've had to gingerly face the clips on the grinder a few times. Or you could face the caps a bit I suppose.
Be sure that the opposite cap is fully seated as well.
    Good luck!

    Default Had the same issue

    Larry,

I've had a similar issue with my 11A when I changed u-joints. Mine was quite close so I ended up lapping the circlips a few thou and that helped.

I like the idea of grinding down the end of the bearing caps.

I ended up shaving the bearing cups and the clips snapped right in. Thanks for your suggestions.
