Does anyone have a recommendation for what type of battery to use for this purpose? If a typical full sized automotive battery were used, would it last for a few years (if it was charged at the end of every weekend)? Or would a deep cycle marine battery be better and last longer?

    Thanks,
    Jim

I use one of those rechargable jumper batteries with a quick connect, works great and easy to tote.

I use a Sears garden tractor battery, same as in my car (some would say I drive my car like a garden tractor, too!). Not too big or heavy and loads of power. I recharge after a weekend. Cost is about $40 and lasts me a good 3 years or more.

If you don't mind heavy, a regular automotive 12 volt battery will last indefinitely with charging. I have always used one that matched one of my street vehicles (one with a smaller battery), allowing rotation of fresher batteries to high priority applications. You can choose your own priorities.

Like Bill, I've got a Sears Garden Tractor battery.

The selection process was something like this:

    Go into Orchard Supply Hardware.

Buy the smallest 12v lead-acid battery with a handle.

Add the Anderson jack + cables.

    Go racing.
