FYI,
AA pistons now offers a VW 40 HP I-Beam connecting rod, I discussed the possibility of AA making these as they already have a similar rod for both 36 HP and 1500-1600 applications.
John at AA was interested and went ahead and added these to their product line, Thanks John!
As you know AA Pistons is one of the few remaining suppliers of VW 40 HP piston and cylinder sets.
This makes two (or three?) brands and types of aftermarket rods available.
The biggest advantage of aftermarket rods is the cap alignment, factory rods don't have any aligning feature and are very labor intensive when it comes to resizing the big end and when installing them on the crankshaft.
I race Vintage FV and will soon be making a rule change proposal to allow ANY steel connecting rod that matches the factory big end diameter, small end diameter, length, and GCR specified minimum weight. I hope that someone participating in SCCA sees the need to review the current connecting rod rules and get away from the need to specify connecting rod vendors every couple of years as the vendors come and go. (Crower for example)
