    Default Formula car bodywork ID?

    While picking up another car today and digging thru a pile of pieces/parts, in the corner were these 2 pieces. They were hanging out unloved in the corner of this garage for decades! The seller had no information on them other than to say it ran some IMSA race years ago. It’s just these 2 pieces, made of very, very thin fiberglass with strange attachment hooks. It will more than likely end up as “garage art”, but it would be nice to have a story or name to go along with it. The windscreen is low profile and is open at the leading edge.

    Default clue?

    The lump in the middle of the nose might have been clearance for the steering box on an FV? Maybe?

    Also: The cutout for the trailing arm perhaps indicates a single trailing arm; again an FV feature?

    Seems a bit wide for a vintage FF/FC/FB early FVs tended to be wider. Just looking at it makes me think someone grafted a wedge nose onto an early FV (circa 1969/early 1970s?

    The IMSA sticker confuses me.

    Just Guessing, though!

    IMSA ran a series for Formula Atlantic. Somebody's better idea for early 70's March or Brabham? Round recess in the nose maybe for Eldon or Tiga badge.

    It is definately not a Brabham BT38, BT41 or March 722. The steering box bulge for a FV is a good hint.

    I wasn’t thinking FV because of the size of the cut-out for the front suspension. If using a stock beam, the opening would not need to be nearly that wide. I assumed it was that big to accommodate double a-arms.

    IMSA also ran some Super Vee races, I believe before their time in Atlantic. Perhaps only the rounds at Daytona and Sebring, but if memory serves, more venues otherwise...

    1975? Also in ‘76?

    If the cutouts in the lower body are for radius rods, that probably indicates a very short wheelbase - perhaps something with a sideways non-automotive motor. Could be from a Malibu GP type of vehicle, something from Disney, or maybe even a Shrine car. Could be parts collected, fitted, never used.

    Body work appears to be from an Altona formula vee. Built by Horst Kroll -approximately 3 cars built in about 1969. Shane Viccary used to run one in vintage racing - perhaps he can comment on this bodywork. Body work also appears to be the same as the Taylor-Stewart FV recently advertised - I believe the cars were closely related.

    The gentleman that I bought everything from did mention that the name of the car it came from was 2 names. Looks like it’s bodywork for the Taylor-Stewart FV from the ad posted here on ApexSpeed. I will try to get more information.

    It is definitely Altona FV. The same body work was also used on other Canadian FVs (PSR and TSR).

    Altona FVs were built by Horst Kroll, following the Canadian FV tradition of naming for the street of the shop (Altona Rd in Pickering outside Toronto.) There were at least a half dozen Altonas built and more than a few of the Stewart cars.

    The big gap behind the beam was for the steering rods.

    It’s definitely the TSR bodywork from the way the windscreen is formed and the upswept area behind the driver and cutouts for the roll hoop.

    Funny thing is that several months ago I looked at and considered starting a dialogue with the seller of the gorgeous black TSR FV currently advertised. If I didn’t purchase a vintage HP Spitfire, I might be the owner of that car. Wouldn’t it be wild if I had purchased the black TSR and then just by some weird stroke of luck and all of the planets being aligned, I end up finding this bodywork sitting around in the corner of an old garage! This life is strange in a weird and wonderful way!!!!

    Look what was found to accompany the bodywork. How about an original sales brochure for a TS Vee!!!! I wonder how many of these are still around???? Sorry for the sideways pix. This forum baffles me………
