    Default Replay with External Mic

Yes, I know Replays are so like 2010, but what can I say, I'm frugal (cheap SOB) and I have one left over from one I last had an FF more than a decade ago. Yes, I know there are better options, with actual company support......

Anyways, I know these were popular at one point so maybe some experts still out there. I'm trying to run one with the combination external power connection that also has a mic input. Looks like the photo below, except now hardwired to a dash switch. I like the option on the Replay of starting on power-up.

I can't get any audio through the exterior mic. The cheap mic from Amazon included an adapter which also fits into the 3.5mm input, but not sure which type of connector is correct for the Replay adapter., I've tried it both ways both nothing I've tried using the button on top of the camera back that is for external mic, and that is definitely shutting off the internal mic.

The camera takes great video, but has the dud battery like so many others, but I only ever use it with a direction connection, so a non issue there.

    Any thoughts?

I think the Replay is a great choice. Sounds like you set it for external (middle light in back should blink yellow). Some mic’s take a battery, don’t know if battery powered mics are needed but that’s what I use. Here’s a link to what I use for my Replay:

I just put the Replay on my PFM and love it. Check all your settings, it may just be set for external mic.

I like the Replay as well, in fact I am more or less standardizing on the device(s) - Thanks Roel!

I appreciate the link to the mic - should be helpful. Thanks!

I also note there are external batteries available, just harder to find. I believe they are 5v/1A output, so maybe could use a USB "Jump Pack" for power? Might be easier to mount than a cigarette lighter plug, and they have a longer charge "life."

    Cheers - Jim

Thanks for the replies so far, and especially the link the microphone. I'll order one up and try that.

Interesting that there are still some folks using Replays. We need to form our own self-help group :-)

Up until I bought the external mic / external power combination adapter for the new to me RF81 I was just using a switched hardwired 12VDC to USB adapter in my now sold E36 track rat to power the cameras. Another switched adapter would power the external GPS and the phone charger.

I'm still trying to find a location to mount an Iphone so I can see the lap timer. Since I'm a self diagnosed (well not really I've been told by too many people to count as well) too conservative driver, I find the predictive lap (red / green bars) helpful to show that I'm lallygagging and need to drive harder. There just isn't space with the analog gauges. I realize one of those new fangled data / camera / dash systems would solve all of these problems :-)

I have found - bringing another visual "device" into the cross-check, cumbersome - at best. I do like the RACEciever LapCiever A.L.T. (Audible Lap Timer). SHE gives you "Fast, faster, fastest" on laps based on the previous and previous fastest lap for each session. Oh, did I say, in your headset/earphones? It links in through your transponder ID. For tracks that don't have a scoring/timing system, you can get the Infra-Red transmitter/receiver to get the same info. You can often find a used working ALT for around $100 on eBay. New ones about $150 and the IR beacon is about $100.

The small (size of a pack of cards) also shows the lap time. I wouldn't describe the viewing image as "large," but readable. For the "single-hander" (no crew/radio crew) they also have a track radio receiver to get the details of whats-what.

Just a few quick ways to spend a few bucks. But way cheaper than an AIM setup, and you can leave the phone in the helmet bag!

    Cheers - Jim

I can confirm that the above mic does in fact work with a Replay 1080. It doesn't work with the mic-power off, but does work with mic-power on. One more thing to forget to when getting belted up solo :-)

    Thanks for the lead!

I'm using the Movo LV10 for about a year, so I can recommend it as well.

I had a Replay (the big one) for several years, and then it got stolen at Roebling...

Loved the video. Support was so-so. They replaced my original with the wonky battery, but I bought one of their remote turn-on buttons (GREAT ITEM) that unfortunately destroyed the camera. So then because the camera was out of warranty, they charged me for a remanufactured one, and then wouldn't replace the button (which I paid something like $90 bucks for - evidently this great item was too much of a problem to actually fix) and instead just gave me a remote power cable.

So has anyone found one of the Chinese copies that are as good? Haven't had video since 2017....
