    Default Engine Oil Temp

    Gents;

    Q: Where is the best place to position a Mocal Laminova oil/water heat exchanger on the midyear VD (parallel configuration). Presumably, from one of the radiator’s outlets (read: cooled water).

    Q: Will a six (6) inch heat exchanger be adequate?

    Merry Christmas, Friends.

    Its hard to say if the six inch will do the job. Do you have the water temp in check during the hottest days? If you don't you'll just make the problem worse with putting the oil heat into the water. If you can find a setrab heat exchanger I'd use it as I don't think the laminova coolers work as well. Sadly they're not made anymore.

    IMO, the best position for an oil-water heat exchanger is immediately after the engine coolant outlet (that's where mine is). There are 3 reasons for this:
    1. You want the exchanger to warm cold oil as fast as possible
    2. You typically want oil temperature to be 30-50F above the engine water temperature
    3. For maximum engine cooling efficiency, you want the hottest water to go directly to a radiator, and not send water heated by the exchanger directly back to the engine

    In addition, it has been shown that radiators in series usually cool better than radiators in parallel.

    Since I ran only a small "donut" VW sandwich-style oil-water heat exchanger on my Pinto FC (5/8 " dia water supply from engine outlet to series-radiator cross-over tube) for years and found the oil cooling sufficient, I think a 6" heat exchanger "might" be OK, depending on its efficiency.

    I have a Laminova oil to water heat exchanger if you are interested. Bought it but never used it.
