Default Installing Spherical bearings Tool - VD

    Howdy,

I need to replace the spherical bearings in some Van Diemen a-arms. The prior owner provided a tool for the smaller ones but I need one for the 13/16 or .8125? or .800 might be what Primus sells? OD (3/8 Bore) outer upper a-arm.

Prior has evidence of using an center punch to hold it which I dont agree with. Is it a swedge? And what brand/tool/source do you get it from?

Whats the best tool for the price TO DO IT RIGHT?

    Thx

    Default Primus

Give Brad at Primus a call and tell him what you need. He has the correct tooling. I used a press and the special tool to replace mine.
    Don’t mess with center punches.

We use a shop press and a socket. Works great...never had an issue.

Are you talking about the tools to stake V-groove bearings, or a tool to use with your press to install the bearings into the bore?

Here is some info on staking bearings:

Hi David, Yes I think it is that kind of tooling I need. Just dont know where to get it. Got an email out to brad at primus for one...

I am afraid if I just press it in with a socket it will slip out. The install process creates a flange on both sides to keep it seated.

Based upon what I see I need one that is 13/16 OD but dont have the lathe to cut my own flange on a tool.

I might have the correct size staking tool. If I do, you're welcome to borrow it.

Thanks Mike! Prefer to buy if I can source the right one.

Thanks Fred for the pointer. Still not sure which one? They have teeth which seems odd and plus I need to request a quote?

I will see what Brad comes back with.
    Thanks everyone!

I can think of at least 2 reasons why leaving 1/2 the space unstaked might be good:
    1. If you have to reuse the bearing, you can stake it the 2nd time in a fresh area, and
    2. It takes half the force to stake as doing the full circumference.

Excellent points. I guess I never thought about re-using a spherical bearing, but may happen in a pinch or spare...

    Default Staking

Lots of talk hear about proper staking in a new bearing. But not a word on the proper way to remove the old one? That is the hard part.

What I've done in an emergency is just press it out using a socket or similar that puts the contact area as close to the bearing OD as possible w/o interfering with letting the old staking straighten up while pushing it out. Obviously, one has to support the part it's in well to allow this.

Done correctly, the bearing "may" be reusable and the part it was in should not be damaged.

I manufacture and sell spherical bearing removal, installation and staking tools. I have all of the common sizes in stock ready for immediate shipment. These tools require one set for each size bearing, however they give you a finished swage that meets all applicable standards. Replacing spherical bearings is important, they cannot come loose. Give me a call or send an e-mail and I will be glad to help you. Please check my web site for my phone number and e-mail address.
