    Default Awesome open trailer ideas

Hi, I'm new to racing, just bought an FV and now need a trailer. Living in a subdivision with a small budget I am limited to a open trailer I can store in my garage. From what I'm seeing available in my area (South Carolina) this is probably some kind of landscape trailer. My max dimensions are 16'x8'x7'H - so maybe a 12'x6' bed.

I need to get tools & tires securely to the track and like to have camping as an option. I'm interested in the creative approaches you all may use or have seen work as inspiration! Secure boxes/cabinets/racks, car covers, creative use of canopies, tents & hammocks - any ideas like this would be greatly appreciated!

    Thank you,
    Rich

    Default Neil Roberts Folding Trailer...

I really like the solution Neil Roberts developed: Gauging interest in a light folding trailer

Rich, I used to tow my FF, which was slightly longer and wider than an FV, with a 12 x 6 single axle utility trailer, so your FV would be no problem. Once in a while a purpose built open trailer will pop up on Apexspeed, just keep watching.

Have a look at some English racer sites. They use a lot of open trailers with some really neat options and ideas.

This was custom built by John Staudacher but you could kinda copy it with a commercial open trailer, posts, and box on top. Fits in my garage nicely.

Eric - love that trailer, would like to see pics of the front of the box, so as to do similar to my open tilt-bed Trailex...

I also store my trailer in the garage. Weight was a concern for me, so I wanted something as light as possible, that I could tow with as many different vehicles as possible.

At 6x10 and 450 pounds, the Aluma 7210 was a perfect fit for my FF. I assume it wouldn't have any problems with a FV.

I used this one for many years. The storage over the cockpit kept it relatively dry and secure from passersby.

    Default Kendon USA

We had a Kendonusa.com folding trailer.
Interesting feature was you can stand them up and roll
the trailer out of the way. Bought ours used on one of the RV sites.

im in the same boat as you. I don't have a lot of options to store a full sized trailer without renting a very expensive storage spot so I have a small Aluma 7x12 trailer. It is about 600# empty, overall length is about 14ft so it fits nicely in a two car garage.

Look for snowmobile trailers I think they are. They have an option where the axles are on long swing arms on both sides of the trailer. When you want to load/unload, you pull a pin out and the swing arms move up, lowering the bed of the trailer to the ground. No ramps needed.

That sounds very much like the configuration of my Trailex, which was custom-built for a DSR; I actually do still need ramps as the bed is still 2" thick, thus the top of the bed lays 2" off the ground... joys of a car with little more than 1" ground clearance at the front! Barely makes it on the 1" thick ramps... some more beveling etc there would be nice.

OTOH, I share my trailer with my other racecar, which is an ITB 924, so getting too clever with boxing over the top of the car, while it'd be nice, is an obstacle. I do like the idea of a marine-grade plywood or equivalent (maybe CF?) box over the tongue, over the tire storage area (which is also on the tongue)...

Actually, I think they are ice fishing trailers. Kinda interesting idea to get the trailer flat to the ground...

This was my thought, too. We had a karting sponsor called TricTrailer and it really was.

I think it weighed 375 lbs. and took very little storage space.

If you like to tow quickly, make sure you get a trailer with real sized tires and not those crappy little things that come on Harbor Freight trailers. At 75 MPH those little things are close to flying apart!
