What do you know about engine? Time, internals, who built, does it turn over, etc.?

I don't know much about the engine. It came with the car. It has been stored in a room temp. environment. It does turn over. We removed the cam to turn it over. It has a Bertills valve cover, but I don't know if it was recently done by Bertills. Obviously then, I don't know how much time was on the engine or any specs on it.

Hi Bob, It's going to be dazzling when finished. What's the procedure for obtaining that brilliant finish on the tub?

I ask the same question and ROlberg was nice enough to let me know his "secret" so here's his reply below.

I believe that we stripped the paint with paint stripper
wet sanded it with 600/800 grit sandpaper
washed the tub with Alumabrite to help remove stains
polished the tub with White Diamond polish

P.S. Don't forget the liberal application of elbow grease that I'm sure he added to the finish!

*** PRICE REDUCED *** Now asking $ 10,900.00. I am retiring in September and will be losing my shop space. This car needs to see the track again, don’t let this become someone’s “barn find” in a few years.

The car looks fabulous, do you per chance know who the original owner was?

Was this the same Scott Hutchison who ran FF in Cen Div in the '70s?

Good Luck with the sale, the bare bits look splendid!

The original owner was Scott Ovel, he ran it in both the 1978 US Formula Super Vee Championship where he finished 8th, as well as the 1978 USAC Mini-Indy Series where he finished 35th. Yes, it is the same Scott Hutchison that ran FF in CenDiv in the 70's. He continued to run FF and FC into the 90's.

Thought it could have been Scott Ovel's as the only blue car in your entry list highlights, having seen it run in the day.

Sorry to hear about Scott Hutchison, RIP. I particularly recall his red car in '76, a Merlyn if remembering.

    Thanks. :-)

I bought the car (and trailer) from Scott, raced it occasionally (with limited success but a lot of joy) in the Gold Cup and Mini Indy series for a couple of years. Not fast but fun. T-boned at Milwaukee I replaced the left side pod, it was punted off one at B.I.R. into the trees at full song backward and replaced the wing. Finally with a Bertills motor I was having some fun, but alas, the ground effects cars were unbeatable by the time I got the new engine, except for Herm Johnson (R.I.P. old friend) in his 620. He was able to benefit from some development work with Lola and the Carl Haas guys on the 620 which resulted in narrowed suspension, much improved straight line speed, and some well deserved results improvement. Good to see you got the white paint off and back down to the beautiful blue gelcoat. The tub is beautiful. Nice work!

Thanks for the kind words. Do you happen to remember who you sold it to? It will help to fill in the history of the car.

Sorry Bob, I don’t remember the next buyer. My brother Tim did schools and regionals in the car. He might know, so I will ask him to comment as I barely remember what I had for breakfast today.

The good news: I finally remembered what I had for breakfast on the day of my last post of 7/21/19.
The bad news: my brother does not remember to whom the car went.

I believe I sold it shortly after the 1981 Milwaukee Mini Indy race. Good luck.

Why yes it is Steve. It was a T322 with a ‘shadetree’ motor I put together. I bought it as a roller from someone in Ohio who had blown up the motor. Most fun I ever had in an open wheel car, the 2nd of 3 FSVs I owned and drove. The pic is from the 1978 Watkins Glen F1 GP weekend. If you were there you might remember the exact count but seems to me it was 62 FSVs started that race. We all had to get FIA Entrant and Drivers licenses to race that weekend. Those were the days.

I remember your car from the Glen, Mike.

Epic weekend for me, but even more epic was the next weekend in Montreal. Ran four laps before any F1 cars ever did (Opel station wagon with Bondo — but with a Media pass), met the Wilson sisters on an elevator (Heart), was in the "official" bar atop the hotel when Mario entered to tears and applause (Ronnie had just died), met Lauda, Regga, Laffite, Stuck, and more.

I was 18 years and about 80 days old.

Eric, Steve, Bob..........I must say that I miss racing, I mean, I miss the whole thing: the acquisition of an open wheel car to race (and I had 1/2 dozen, one at a time of course), working on it till the wee hours of the morning even a few all nighters, sourcing parts, loading up and towing from Iowa to Watkins Glenn or Road Atlanta and a dozen or more places in between, all that went with paddocking and camping, friendships and comradery, and the racing......OMG.......the wheel to wheel racing.........God I love that! I know one cannot live in the past, and I don’t, but I sure do miss racing! Bought an old FST roller a few years ago, built a motor, renewed a 30+ year old competition license, and took another stab at it. Finally after several lack luster event weekends and a few old equipment failures, I had a few sessions out of 4 days on track at IMS when it all started to come back to me, I mean I REALLY got into it again! I remember briefly thinking to myself something to the effect that if I died in my sleep that night I would die a happy man. We did have life altering times back then, back in the 70s and 80s, didn’t we? It sure seems like it now. I know you did Eric. We all did, back in the day.

I'm off to bed Mike, but just caught this and had to say what a lovely post to digest before drifting off.

Well done, and I couldn't agree more -- and am genuinely happy for you to read of such memories.

Why else are we alive, if not to truly live?

Note to Self somewhat, we're looking at retirement funds and asking almost every day... Do we enter into our 60s with barely enough to survive but asking What If? Or commit some of that to dying happier?

Posts like yours sway me to the latter. Thank You. Hope to see you around sometime very soon.
