    Default Drilled Rotors

Just returned to Texas from Vintage event at Road America. Terrific weekend driving an iconic track. First time and happy to check the "bucket List" box. Nine FCs made the Sunday Main Event.

For brakes on my '88 Reynard FC, I am running TDI lightweight two-piece brake rotor assembly. Based on price, Pegasus thinks a lot of these. They came on the car when I purchased it decades ago.

We have nicknamed them cheese graters as they seem eat pads pretty fast. I was told, that when new, the rotor's cross drilled holes may have had a chamfer. Now that the discs have some wear, the chamfer is not apparent.

Watching my wallet, I am curious if the TDI cross drilled rotors can be turned. I recognize there are issues with minimum thickness that may lead to cracking, warping etc. Also, that turning will not reduce the cheese grater status. Anyone have experience with turning these TDI rotors and know a safe minimum thickness?

Is there a more affordable source for brake rotors?

I understand the Campbell manufactured pad is now the preferred set-up.

(We ran a SuperVee in your group, was a great event !)

Anyway, have you considered buying a simple solid rotor and having a machine shop put two simple straight face slots on each side? Similar net effect, (except the minor weight saving), gotta be more affordable I'd think.

    Default Drilled Disc

    Dump the drilled disc.
Ask TDI for some slotted, solid ones.

    Default Using plain disks

In the last 4 decades I have not used slotted or drilled disks on my racecars. The holes/slots create places for the rotors to crack, and as said above, they eat pads. The pads I have used have never had enough off-gassing to warrant them.

As most here know, Dave W doesn't use brakes

If the rotors aren't too thin AND there are no cracks, I am not sure why you couldn't put a light chamfer on the existing holes......

    cheers

If they are worn enough to not have a chamfer any longer, turning them will give you a rotor that is way, way to thin.

Unless you are desperate to get to weight, drilled rotors are not really worth it. They sound cool, but that's about it. A solid rotor with some vent/cleaning grooves bolted to your aluminum hats will be a good combo.

Dave W, Where do you purchase your brake discs? I don't see a source beyond Pegasus. I cant find a direct contact to TDI or other manufacturer.

TDI is actually Two Dogg Inc. Their solid scalloped rotors are VERY nice!

I get mine from ICP. Richard Pare makes rotors for a lot of applications. Call him at 317-273-0089.

The ones you put in your fancy freezer thingy - that was in what 2011? They are still on the car. I used to replace them about every 8 weekends.

    True story.

I'd bet a solid rotor that's been cryo'ed would outlast the sun.

Another satisfied customer of Richard here. Reasonable prices and they seem to last forever.
