Anybody got a hot tip for removing silicone from gasket surfaces? I've tried the clear goop that's supposed to do it but it is pretty ineffective.

I use laquer thinner. I soak it into a rag then lay the rag against where I want the silicone removed. It softens it up enough after a couple of minutes that is can be removed by rubbing a little. I always keep "trash" rags around for these kinds of jobs.
The old Cam 2 gas you drained out of the fuel cell at the end of last season works good too and is cheap.
