VIR is so drop dead beautiful that the best place to stay is in the motorhome at the track. Especially with the leaves changing.

Second best, is if you have a friend with a house of Hyco Reservoir.

    Closest motels... Danville, VA.

Being a Danville VA local, I guess I have to be there. Look for a Blue #53 Merlyn passing you,
"YEAH RIGHT", the blue #53 back marker is more like it.
Those of you that have never run VIR, be ready to put on the FUN attitude. You will enjoy it.
Hope to see you folks there.

    Hi Curtis,
Well, it looks like I'm definitely going to have to withdraw my
entry. As I suspected, there is no way that I will be able to get
out of working that weekend. It is a critical phase in a five year
project, so I don't want to take any chances on having someone
    else make a mistake.
Oh well, see you in the spring...

Try the Hampton Inn in Danville for a good place to stay. We just did a big vintage race there a couple of weeks ago and the Hampton Inn got good scores.

However, if you can possibly bring your motorhome, do so. The paddock has numerous 50/20amp hookups, the parking area is huge and the bathroom/shower facilities are clean and heated.

The track has huge runoff areas(thank god in Saturday's vintage FF race)and the manhood test is to go up through the esses flat out. It's a beautiful track and my favorite.

    Justin,

I stayed at the Hampton Inn last week end when I photographed the F2000 race, ..

Hampton Inn in Danville get's my vote!!!

yes, .. flat out through the uphill esses will take some rather large *#$@%, .. as well as flat over the "sky turn", ..the left hander after the esses.

Moving up in the world? Hampton Inn was where we stayed during the driver's school. I think I may get a room there as well. See you Friday.

    John,

I just pulled in the drive way so I'll make this short till I have time to post a full report, ..

I took the race group poll by a second and won FF.
Third over all in the race, .. a few F500s where very fast on a track where no one could get tire temps up.

This marks my first ever poll, .. and my first ever win!

I'll post a full report tomorrow.

Thanks gang, .. it's fun to be on the poll and win the race, .. but I didn't have anyone to play with.

A few of the FFs that qualified did not make the race, .. the next closest FF in the race was 7.5 seconds slower so I didn't get to see him. I did get to lap 98% of the FV field though.

So for me it was kind boring, .. just 10 practice laps so I worked on VIR and tried to get my lap times down.

The problem everybody fought all week end was getting the tires hot and getting grip. The Vector was sliding all over on Friday practice.
So for Saturday I made changes to increase tire temps and put on a set of new scuffs for qualifying.

My qualifying time was considered slow for VIR but it was inline with everybody else who where slow also.

I made more changes before the race and ended up picking it up by 4 seconds.

All in all a fun week end.

I have to say, .. I LOVE VIR!! A different challenge at every corner, .. and the up hill esses are a BLAST. And yes, . . once I got some grip I could do them flat out.

The big problem spots for me where the right hander leading into Oak Tree turn, .. and the left hand bend before going down the hill at Roller Coaster.

Both of these seemed to "interupt" the braking point so I have to brake sooner then I wanted and get back on power for a second or trial brake through them.

For the right hander before Oak Tree I would brake at the 2 marker, about 70%, get second gear for a quick stab, then downshift to first at the turn in to Oak Tree. This was what Boris, and some of the F2000 guys told me to try.

The left bend before the Right going into Roller Coaster was tougher, but I used the same idea.
I would brake past the 1 marker, .. almost at the arrow, .. 60% braking and trail braked up the left bend to the turn in for the right hander, .. first gear and down the hill.
I know I left some time here and wanted to try turning in for the left then braking, .. but I didn't have the Balls to try it during the race.

There you have it, ...now it's time for the winter rebuild, ..
