Default 2017 F2kCS video dump

I know many of you guys run onboard cameras, maybe we can make this a place to post them all up. I love seeing races from other perspectives, it's always interesting because I know what I see and other view points can be so different. Anyway, if you've got 2017 onboard footage from F2k events, post them here.

Mine, starting at Indy, race 2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sk3PpzN8oTo&t

Pitt race 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IcF8cTk8EBk&t

Summit Point Race 2:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R1OBDEYeK8U

It seems I focus on race 2s. I have great footage of Summit Point's race 1 of a long and hard battle with Tim Minor from start (literally) to finish, I'll get it uploaded this week and put it up here.

Also, seems I can't embed. Neither the simple HTML () link nor youtube's embed code work here. If anyone knows if it can be done here, I would take instruction with thanks.

Hope you enjoy, and I hope to see other onboards posted!

Default My contributions

Just saw this. Great idea, Tim!

I like to put together edits from my on-board video for each of the weekends we're out there with you guys. It's something to share with friends, sponsors, or just anyone that shows interest. I figure those folks don't want to sit through 30-45 minutes of raw race footage.

I also try to experiment with something new each time out. We've messed around with recording our radio comms this season and that sometimes makes for cool video. Here are the last few vids I've done:

Dave's editing puts mine to shame. I love the radio chatter videos.

I am going to edit some more 2017 onboard this week, hopefully I'll make a big post in the next few days with a lot more 2017 F2KCS footage from all over the season.

It was a really exciting year, the most exciting I can remember in terms of on track competition and close racing, which is saying something because F2KCS has never been boring.

A quick and dirty edit I did after the NJMP finale weekend of qualifying 2. I took the first 2 laps and the last 2 laps of qualifying on pole in the rain.

I will hopefully get more up on Friday.

Thanks guys. Here's one more from NJMP this year (2017):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7XaVyhZZk0

Just natural sound and driver-pit wall comms from practice, qual, and race.

BTW, Tim is totally wheelin' it in that NJMP qual session. Impressive.

Since we didn't really get to run at Atlanta....

WGI Race 1 is up. The journey to even start this race is like a mythological epic. The RSport guys put in a Herculean effort.

Yeah. I thought I was ded. Jim Kearney was at the left hander going down into the boot and all I hear on the radio is "....nice save."

Took me by surprise a little bit. I didn't think I had it until well after it was back under me. Never lift!

I'm sorry this is so late! I've been using go pros... I have a hero 3 and a hero 4, now. The battery on the 3 is getting pretty wonky. A lot of times if i plug it in to charge with the camera "off" it "bricks" the camera and doesn't charge... They little light on the back comes on and stays on until i pull the battery. I have to turn it on, plug it in and then turn it off to get it charge. Then when it's full it bricks itself again until I pull the battery. Very weird but they're easy to use and I just reinforce the mount with gaffer tape and make zip tie leashes because the mounts are plastic and aren't very trustworthy. I lost a few in the early days due to Mount failures.

Here's raw visorcam footage from NJMP season finale, race 1.

I thought I had zero chance to actually finish, I would have bet my house that I was going to crash before the end. The car was a handful and I had pressure from behind the whole way so I had to keep sailing it in, especially T1/T2. Almost every lap I just prepared myself to wreck and kept my foot in it. We also had a brake bias issue the Summit Point and NJMP weekends where the rear brakes were locking under heavy braking, even though at one point the bias was dialed 75/25% to the front. Was an issue at the pedal box we didn't find until after Q2 and NJMP and we still didn't get totally right before race 2, but made it a lot better for race 2. It exacerbated the, erm, "free" handling we had here in race 1 quite a bit, especially in the hard braking but high speed T1/T2.

There's an especially good one at 20:40, here.

I am compiling a raw race 2 visorcam from NJMP now. Will edit better videos using the visorcam, forward facing go pro and rear facing go pro from the whole weekend soon.

That is some really bad wind noise, those are a pretty penny for mediocre quality and terrible audio.

The quailty depends on the visor id imagine. If its scratched or oily its going to be poor quality vice have a nothing in front of the camera.

Honestly the quality is just not good for 1080 HD, I would love to see Sony, GoPro or some other camera company make something like this with the great image quality those cameras all have. Unfortunately the market for this kind of camera is so small that it will never make that great of profit.

For example, in Race 2 Jenks dumped a ton of fuel the first 2 laps (as is the norm. Lenny likes to make sure that baby is topped up!) And I am entirely covered in fuel, as well as, of course, my visor. I didn't have any tearoffs, I forgot to order more, so you can see how badly the visor getting a film over it impacts the video quality. I was using the 720p camera I rented for the weekend. I think the view is more than worth it. The FOV is exactly what I see from the cockpit, it gets great footage of all your hand work and being in the helmet it gets what I consider the best "flavor" video... the big slide in race 1 at 20:40 or whatever, the car is so gone and loaded up that when I get it back it snaps my head side to side.... you don't get that with a body mounted Go Pro, even mounted on the top of the helmet you lose all the bottom/cockpit FOV.

I love the thing. If I run anymore next year I will definitely get a 1080 visorcamusa. That's me, and that stuff really really interests me and gets me excited about video. Go Pro feels very flat and muted to me in terms of exciting presentation.

The wind noise problem I think is also made worse than the average with my particular helmet and where my head sets above the front bodywork... I had all the vents taped up for most of the year because EVERYTHING was coming straight into my helmet and my eyes. Someone ran off into the grass in front of me? Grass straight into my eyes. I was literally picking blades out from under my eyelids at night. The vents aren't the problem, but air is coming off the front bodywork over my hands and right up my chest and into the helmet from the bottom. I hoped taping the vents would create a high pressure area inside with nowhere for the air to escape but it made no difference. I need to pour a new seat and sit a bit lower or buy a helmet skirt.

Great circulation on hot days, though.

Don't get me wrong I love the FOV it gives you. It is awesome seeing what your hands are doing, the data logger and everything. I just think for the price it is not worth it from what I have seen image and audio quality wise. Yes, things like dirt, scratches, etc. will cause a diminish in quality but not that much. As for the audio no POV camera has good audio unless you run an external mic/recorder.

My brother and I have been running a lav mic to the back of the car for years now from the GoPro and it sounds pretty good, not perfect by any means. When filming William Byron at my last job we ran a shotgun nice with an external recorder in the car and it turned out pretty good, minus the front scraping due to the car being too low.

Well, as it stands right now I am retired.

At least from full time competition. Budgets don't last forever. My plan for 2018 was run at it hard, one last time, try and win the championship and see if we could roll that into some momentum and maybe some funding to keep going. Unfortunately we ended up sitting parked too often especially early with burned out ECUs, a bum motor for 4 races that took us too long to give up on, broken plug wires.

That's always been my luck baby! Guy with luck like mine can't run forever. Just can't get any momentum going.

I Also have a remote mic for my go pro but because you have to use the skeleton case I've never run it on the car! Too worried about the cam getting destroyed.

The visorcam definitely isn't going to have better audio than a mic'd up go pro, but when I edit the video I'll probably use the audio from the best sounding go pro to replace the visorcam audio. It is much clearer.

We drilled a hole in the GoPro case .... I'd like to get my hands on a Visorcam to test it out especially since I work for a football program it would be cool to see how it works. I think it is a good product just like GoPro it is a very niche product.

Were you planning to switch this car out to Zetec? Was this video with Zetec or Pinto?

What video camera are you using? Image quality and stability are good.

I am in the process of converting to a zetec power plant. I was using a Pinto engine in this video and I was recording with an old GoPro Hero HD.

Looks pretty good for 3 years of track rust to knock off!

I've never driven a pinto so this might be a stupid question, but what is the biggest difference between the Zetec and Pinto? Torque? I've run a zetec and MZR but never a pinto.

How was the brake balance? Purely armchair quarterbacking but with the bit of lockup seen in the video, can you dial it back a click or two?

I definitely had some serious rust to knock off and I was just glad to be on track. I have not run a zetec but I am in the process of converting to one.

The brake balance was something I was sorting that whole day, I did manage to get it under control and make the adjustments in the car. In that race I believe I made two adjustments to the brake bias.

Looked pretty good! Thanks for the video. I've never driven Blackhawk, interesting layout to it.
