    Default FSV air-cooled engines

Who are some engine builders for these?

I have a 1700 that sounds great but want to have info before going to the track.

    TIA

The only guy I know of still doing them is Jake Raby in GA, and I'm not sure if he's taking new customers. Don't think FAT does them anymore. Might be some porsche guys still doing them.

I believe all the vintage clubs decided to allow the 2L. Same as the 1.7 but with rods having a smaller big end and the crank being offset ground 5mm. The off-road guys burned up a lot of 1.7 parts, so it seemed like allowing the 2L would be a good idea.

I have a 200hp Raby engine. I dread the day it will need a refresh.

Wow, I was hoping you guys would say to just talk to FV engine builders!

Sounds like I have a little more work cut out for me. I sure hope it's fun to drive!

so Froggy - did you have him build it for you or did you buy it with a project? If you had it done, what was the cost, the big mods, and the displacement?

The Type 4 bottom ends, especially with carillos, are bulletproof. Keeping the top end together and the valves where they are supposed to be is another thing entirely. I seem to remember six stud kits and exotic materials in the studs to deal with three different expansion coefficients.

I have one of the last CB performance pumps that uses the stock location for scavenge and has a big external pressure stage - but I've never seen another since I got mine in the mid-90s.

Guess I need to hit the LA Fairgrounds Porsche/VW/Hotrod swap meet more often!

If it helps about 30 years ago CB mastered the last undamaged Bertis cam I had and I bought billet cams of of them for years. Also, I know some guys had Arias and ./ or venolia make up pistons for the 1700.

Thee head is where all the HP is at.

Never had much problems with valves using 289Z exhausts and VW intakes, as long as the exhausts were changed on a schedule IIRC about every 10-12 race weekends. Get good dual valve springs.

    Rick,
Sit down, take a deep breath....
12 Years ago it was $9,700 starting with a perfectly running engine.
It did come with a nice 28 page book including all the specs and dyno sheets and lots of instructions.
I have great respect for Mr. Raby.
