    Default Trailer with disc brakes

What trailer manufacturers make trailers with disc brakes?

    I'm looking for a 7'x16' v-nose aluminum trailer...

    TIA

There are no electric disc brakes for trailers I can see; they're all hydraulically actuated - so you have two options. #1 is a 7' x 16' v-nose surge brake trailer . . . which is probably rare or non-existent. Some horse and boat trailers still have surge brakes. #2, if you REALLY want discs - and is probably easier - is to find a trailer in the configuration you like, convert to discs and put on an "electric over hydraulic" system, which still uses an electric brake controller, but gives more power and control to stopping the trailer. Very pricey and overkill, IMO, on a lightweight small trailer.

I own a Featherlite 7x18 v-nose I bought here on Apexspeed two years ago. I have been really pleased with it. Worth every penny.

    Dave,
I know it seems like here in 2018 that disc brakes should be standard on trailers.
But, for the most part they are not.
I can say this though; My motorhome has shorter stopping distances when I'm pulling the race trailer than when I'm not. So, those ancient drum brakes must work pretty good.

I just like the ease of maintenance with disc brakes compared to drum brakes.

I just bought a NEO NAVF 7x16. It has Dexter NEV-R-ADJUST brakes, which I am hopeful means what it says. Also, weighs 1780#, which was a prime consideration for me. I don't recall seeing any with disc brakes.

Which brings back the days when shops charged you extra for brake work on disc brakes.

Considering that you can buy complete brand new Dexter backing plate assemblies, shipped to your door, for $30-40 each, I don't know how maintenance could be any cheaper or easier. Pull the drums every few years, repack the wheel bearings, 5 x 9/16 nuts and all new brakes at the same time. I keep the best take-off from each side as a carrying spare.

I think there is a self energizing aspect to drum brakes that make them useful on trailers.

That is absolutely correct. It all depends on where the lining is located and how long it is.

That is why cars with drum brakes really did not need power assist. Not so with discs.
