Cleaning Oil Tank

What is the best procedure for cleaning an oil tank? Can you just rinse it out with something? I'd like to just take off the bottom hose and leave it installed. I'm sure just the very bottom is all that has dirt and gunk in it.

If you've had a blowup, the only way to be sure is to send it out to an ultrasonic cleaner. Like these guys: http://www.ultrasoniccleaningcorp.com

Many FST drivers have mostly been using tanks the come apart so cleaning is simple. However, a few people have very thin and tall tanks which only have tiny holes for oil ports. If you need to clean those at the track you won't have an ultrasonic unit or a pressure washer. Here is what one FST driver did, he bought a spray can of Gunk, took it to what we used to call a quarter car wash where an hour later and $30 poorer he came back with a clean tank and made the event the next day.

Also if you have bearing bits in the oil change the filter and cooler and be sure to clean all the lines. With the pump plumbing most of use, the oil comes from the tank and goes straight into the motor and only then the pump's scavenge side sends it to the filter.

Thats why we run a filter after the oil comes out of the engine to keep the coolers and tank clean then a filter before it goes in the engine.

Unless you have some kind of build-up, the soap in the sprayer should loosen things up, then rinse

Have have been using Pacific Oil Cooler service for 40 years or so. Make sure to tell them you do not need FAA certification. Not cheapo but less than a new cooler.
