This coil came on an SCCA Club Ford. Pretty certain I can't use it in vintage club ford and a standard, un-amplified coil is already on the car. But, what IS this thing legal for? Maybe someone can use it and I should sell it to them.

Most anything other than a true SPEC class. It will work with points, electronic points etc. It is "worth" just about what any aftermarket coil is. (I am not sure that it isn't legal in CFF ? )

In your experience, do they actually work ?, or is it just sales hype.
I have access to an un used one with the earthed ignition leads.

Nope. We have tried dozens of these types of things on the dyno. With compression ratios as low as what we have, LOTS of dwell capability, and no boost, then spark is the least of your worries. You of course want a reliable system, but the vast majority of aftermarket stuff promising lots of voltage, dwell extension, etc, do NOTHING and in fact can hurt. eg. A plug fouls for a second. A stock system firing to an open circuit just puts out a 20K pulse. No problem, the plug dries and then starts firing again. An after market system in the same scenario puts a 50K V or more pulse out. It blows a pin hole in a plug wire, or cross fires in the distributor cap, leaving a carbon track, etc. You now have a problem that kills the session or more. You need these kinds of things for 11:1 compression ratios, etc. But they are only necessary evils. (Much like premium fuel in your grandma's Buick.)
