Default Recondition gears and dog rings

Need name and PH number of any outfit(s) that recondition Hewland and Webster gears and dog rings. Recondition means: recut the worn out rounded dogs. Thanks...

How about that guy down in California that makes relatively inexpensive dog rings? He may recut them. Some guys in ICSCC use his products. I think Wes Tipton used some of them.

Well, from what I've seen, Wayne Mitchell at dogrings.com has the best prices. I don't know if anyone has mentioned him yet.

    All,

While I hope your experience is different than mine, I bought new dog rings from Dogrings.com for a FA (ft200) a few years ago.

The rings were not heat treated correctly and broke apart in the gearbox, doing quite a bit of damage to the shift forks. While my $ was refunded for the rings, I was out the cost of the rebuild.

Sometimes lowest cost is not the best way to go!

You made this news public a couple of years ago to which Dogrings responded. His side of the story was, you are RIGHT he was new to the business back when that occurred and he admitted the heat treating wasn't done properly.

Several people in ICSCC have used his products in FF and FC with no failures such as yours. Perhaps he has the problem solved/

    PS:
I have no dog in the fight. Never had a chance to use his product nor do I have a financial interest in the company. Just trying to help a fellow racer from ICSCC and a Forum advertiser.

    Default Dog rings

I have been using dogrings from Wayne for many seasons on FF, FSV and FC . They work the same as the Hewland or Webster rings and I replace them at least once a season. Great service and best price I could find. I have not had any gears resurfaced.

    I hope this helps

How many miles do you think is a season is for you?

Being in the Cryo and REM business, I like to see service life numbers on different parts. Would you be interested in sending me your next set of new Dogs for Cryo and REM treatment and then run them for a "season" and report your results?

    On the house of course!

    Default reconditioning

    First off, gears.
Be sure to do a [U]very close[U] inspection on the gears you want the dog ears re-cut, that the gears themselves are not on their last leg already. If they have been around for a long time, don't waste the effort.

Personally, I get more then a year out of new Hewland dog rings, particularly since they went to the smaller ear style.

Also, the dog ring of a Hewland LD box is different then a MK series.
As last I checked, this Westcoast company does not make the LD style.

    Default Hey !

How 'bout me...I started this whole thing. Actually, I'm just planning my winter projects so that I can knock off 2-3 seconds on my PR (Seattle) lap times.

    Default gears

I have had LG & FT gears re-cut and used successfully for many years. Mk series gears have previously been inexpensive to buy relative to the price for having the dogs re-cut. With the cost of Mk series gears now I may have to change my thinking.

I've been using Wayne's dogrings for many years, and have just replaced the set in my Formula Ford Mk8. They lasted about 7 seasons - 7-10 meetings per year.

The price is right, delivery to me is about 5 days, and they dont wear out the dogs on the gears. I've never had to replace a gear.

By the way, I dont use the clutch.

    Default Mr. Stonebridge

Howdy, have been an annual "Contributing Member" in appreciation of the wealth of information learned from the membership. Perhaps you could take the liberty and expand on the benefits of the "cryo" process. Is it just a: hardening process, adding strength, increasing wear properties, reduce drag, etc.? Briefly tell us about it. Thanks for the help and I'm especially appreciative for the interest that all have contributed, thanks guys.

A couple years ago I tore up a FF gearbox 1200 miles from home, with another event the following weekend. Dogrings.com express shipped me new Dogrings (to a coffe shop near where I was camping) in time to run second weekend. Great service and the dogs were fine for the 1-1/2 years I ran that car.
