"As part of a push to improve the promotional appeal of the sport, F1 chiefs have grown concerned that fans are turned off by drivers constantly changing their helmet colours."
Hmmmmmm.....it seems like fans are more turned off by the change in sound of the engines!
This is the biggest prob that F1 has? They are Nut jobs, what they should be fixing is that it costs $500,000,000 to run a competitive team.

with a special thanks to every SCCA worker (NONE OF US WOULD RACE WITHOUT THE WORKERS)
Maybe its part of the new F1s cost cutting measures.... Combine that with limited helmet testing during the off season and F1 may become affordable again

I understand the problem, but there is a much simpler fix. I have taken a lot of photos at COTA the last three years, and it is difficult to identify the cars. Most of the numbers on the cars are small and poorly placed - I think they'd be black-flagged at an SCCA race. The only way to identify most of the cars is by the driver's helmet and those the drivers are wearing don't all match the pictures in the program. For example, you can't see a number from the side: https://www.flickr.com/photos/203086...57648729983397
You can from the front, but it is small:

And Alonso's number is among the most visible. There are a few on wing endplates, but there are others I just haven't found.

The solution is visible numbers.

Oooh! I know, how about BIG numbers ON their helmets!
As long as you can recognize the team by their colors, the constructors don't care if you can recognize the driver.
