In this corner, weighing in at 95 pounds, standing 4-foot-4: Rutherford, Calif.’s Rico Abreu, in the Keith Kunz-owned, Toyota-powered, Abreu Vinyards-sponsored number 97.

In that corner, 325 of the best midget racers in the country, all intent on winning the coveted Golden Driller trophy.

I saw Rico leave the field at a USAC national event at Calistoga last year, and he's run sprinters a time or two here in Petaluma. That dude can flat out wheel a racecar. And yes, he is a little person, how on earth he can manhandle a dirt car with his diminutive size is even more impressive. He was my pick going into the Chili Bowl, wish I could've seen it live!

There is a video somewhere around the YouTubes of a sprint car tumble that caught fire with the driver not able to get out. Rico stopped his car on track, jumped out and pulled the driver out to safety. He's a pretty awesome dude.

    Default Chili Bowl

I was there Saturday afternoon but had not gotten seats in advance and the standing room ("Pit Pass") view was not good this year so I went home. There were lots of monitors in the paddock and vending area, though. When I read the story on who won, I was amazed. He is really a driver. It is a field of some 300+ cars. Look at the names in the results.

Former MiDiv CF driver Doug McCune ran earlier in the week, but I couldn't find him Saturday. It is crowded! I did talk to Bobby Unser.

A most impressive young man. Of course his long-term sights are on NASCAR, and there are the expected questions about the ergonomics of him wheeling one of those beasts. I would think that with responsive enough controls tailored to him he'd be fine. Heck being that small in stature is a great advantage in any race car.
