Don't remember ever hearing Brabham refered to as Black Jack?

Only Black Jack I am aware of is Black Jack Welch - former CEO of General Electric. It's a really, really bad day when Black Jack showed up at your plant
CREW for Jeff 89 Reynard or Flag & Comm.

    Default Black Jack

Indeed, he was called that. It started because he occasionally made (I'll use the boxing term) "Veteran Moves" on the race track. As I recollect, there's a story about Black Jack "losing" a mirror from his race car in an effort to give pause to a close-following competitor.

One fantastic racer. And the Tauranac connection produced some of the best light formula cars of their period.

    Best,

    Chris

There's a wonderful video out there of a race among the F1 team managers driving Ford Escorts, with commentary by Graham Hill. The other announcer says something about Colin Chapman filling Brabham's mirrors and Hill replies that Black Jack never looks in them anyway..

    Here it is:

Really sorry to hear that Brabham has passed on. He was a great racer and was one of my very few idols when I was getting started.

    Default 60's GP heros

It is amazing how many of the 1960's GP star drivers also found the time to build their own cars and run the team, Brahbam, McLaren, Gurney, Surtees, Amon, Siffert, Mezario, Fittipaldi, others? It kind of makes the Daddy driven careers of todays GP stars Hamilton and Rosberg seem a little less heroic.

There is one event, not actually related to motorsports, responsible for the fundamental change that separated drivers from the design and management of race cars: No, not rear engined cars, but the collapse of the British aerospace industry 20 years after winning the Battle of Britain.

Yes and this is what I love about racing small bore formula cars. Most of us here are, if not outright constructors, we are at least "development engineers", owner/ drivers. After all that's the real fun and challenge, to prevail in all 3 areas...
