    Default Very basic questions

    I am installing a AIM Mychron 3 Gold in my FST, so air cooled VW, coil no ECU. I have some very basic questions;

    The manual is less than exact as to where I pick up my RPM signal from the coil, where do I pickup that signal? Is it the same source as the current tach signal? Do I cut a patch cable to make that connection?

    Can I use the existing VDO oil temp sensor to provide that data? The M10 sensor in the box would require dry sump tank modification that I would like to avoid. If the VDO sensor will work is there a cable for that or is that something I need to make?

    Should shock mounts be used when attaching the unit to the dash or should it hard mounted?

    AIM has an easy clip-on cable that will pickup signal for tach. Did you not get it with the kit?

    The harness of your MY3 Gold should have two RPM leads I believe (one should be labeled RPM 150-400V (coil input), and the other RPM 8-50v (Square wave input). You should start with connecting the RPM 150-400V input to the negative side of the coil (same place your existing tach is using). You can extend the wiring with any stranded 18 to 22 ga hookup wire.

    Unfortunately there is no easy way to use your existing VDO temp sensor (though it might be possible, but it's what I call a "science project", which only makes sense if you have the time to figure out the wiring & calibration. I find that simply fitting one of the different AIM temp sensors is easiest. They have M10, and 1/8 NPT temp sensors available. There was an older M5 or M6 thread that might still be available, but most folks used a 1/8NPT adapter.

    We recommend using the rubber isolation mounts provided. If you need some of the M5 screws, to fit those, let us know.
