FORMULA FORD 2000 ZETEC CHAMPIONSHIP ON TRACK

SEBRING, FLA. (March 11, 2002) — The 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship got under way today with pre-event testing for the season-opening doubleheader at Sebring International Raceway.

Run under hot and sunny conditions, 20 cars, took part in optional testing on the 3.70-mile road course. Teams in attendance included AIM Autosport Campbell Racing, Cape Motorsports, GTP Motorsports, JDC Motorsports, Mica Racing, PR1 Motorsports, Richard Morgan Racing, Roquin Motorsports and Walko Racing. The Zetec Championship cars were given two half-hour sessions in the morning and two sessions the afternoon.

While all times were unofficial, timing and scoring was on hand testing new equipment and was able to take times. Leading the way was Travis Irving, of Chino Hills, Calif., driving for PR1 Motorsports, who posted a time of 2:05.268. This time is better than four seconds quicker than the previous lap record set with the old Pinto engine package, by the 1999 Champion, Dan Wheldon.

Day two of optional testing will take place tomorrow, with the Zetec Championship having three half-hour sessions. The official 2002 Formula Ford 2000 Zetec Championship season-opener begins Wednesday, March 13, 2002 with practice and qualifying for Race One.
