    Default Stevan McAleer

'Dirty Mac' who drove for us a few times in 2010 has gotten a ride with CJ Wilson Racing in the Mazda Playboy Cup for 2012. First race at Sebring in a few weeks. CJ Wilson is a pitcher for the LA Angels who hopes to make racing his 2nd career. Dirty will teach him everything he needs to know for sure. Congrats to Stevan - I'm hoping he drives our backup car a few times this season in F2000.

Source? (Careful, it's a trick question. If you can find a source that is an actual Hemingway quote and not someone claiming it's a Hemingway quote you will have accomplished something that has eluded the motorsports community for decades.)

    Some research...........
    Pete--
I was chasing down some references to the famous Ernest Hemingway quote about mountain climbing, bullfighting and motor racing and came across your site, and the notation citing Josh Silverstein that "After years of searching, I have been unsuccessful in attributing this quotation to Ernest Hemingway or to anyone else for that matter."
Well, a couple of years ago I believe I stumbled across the source. No surprise that it was not Hemingway, also no surprise that it was a writer very much like Hemingway, a contemporary of Hemingway who shared similar interests -- makes it easy to mis-attribute the line.
As I am told, the quote belongs to Barnaby Conrad, a writer of the same era as Hemingway and a San Francisco raconteur of some note. Mostly he did magazine articles but his books include "The Death of Manolete." He also owned a San Francisco night club for many years named El Matador, part of San Francisco's Broadway entertainment district.
My source is Dan Gerber, yet another writer of the era (and still today) who also drove Cobras for a time as part of the Carroll Shelby stable. I had the pleasure to interview Gerber last year. He's also recently back racing in vintage.
I was raised in San Francisco, and yes I've been to El Matador -- the place used to have a fantastic zimbalist player (think hammering directly on piano strings) who entertained diners. Sad to say I never met Conrad -- I was not yet a writer myself -- but he was large in San Francisco lore so I certainly knew about him. It doesn't surprise me at all that a quote believed from Hemingway would actually be from Conrad.

    Damn Rick,
Now i'm glad i posted that picture. (Janice didn't like it because the car was blurred).
We might now have the answer to one of the great mysteries in racing lore.
Amazing stuff happens off season (other than long FV arguments).

    Default Barnaby Conrad

    Mike,
I agree it was worth a little research. If it wasn't Conrad it COULD have been. This guy went to a fancy school in CT, was a bullfighter, owned a saloon in San Francisco, spent time at Betty Ford and wrote books about matadors (not the AMC kind), martinis and barflies. I have already ordered a few from Amazon. I can read them between rounds at VIR. See you soon.

Best of Luck to Stevan. He coached my son at GPNY and as we started him in the Rotax Karting series last year. My son and I came to Lime Rock to watch him race in your car. Stevan is a great guy and we wish him much success!!!!

not to take anything away from Conrad but John Fulton's "Bullfighting" and Sidney Franklin's autobiopgraphy make for better reads

But nothing makes you realize how tame and boring your life is like The Sun Also Rises.

After briefly reading some of the Barnaby Conrad bullfighting descriptions, being in racing for many years and seeing a recent special on 'free' mountain climbing I am certain that the original statement that started the discussion is absolutely true. VIR can't get here soon enough.........

I don't think the bravery gap between what we do vs. what Alex Honnold (free solo) does can be quantified...check it and draw your own conclusion...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pPzmYSglBWk

The Sun Also Rises? It was a short book ... so it depends on the quality and length of your life...

    Default Sebring Playboy Cup

McAleer is currently on pole by over a second near the end of Q1. He will be VERY tough to beat from the pole. Still hoping we'll see him at a F2000 race or two with SMR.

He is a hell of a driver.........
