    Default Helmet requirements

Does anyone know if the S2000 helmets are due to expire within SCCA anytime soon?

I thought that I heard these would not be allowed in 2011. Am I correct?

You are correct. The Snell SA2000 certifications are no longer acceptable from January 1, 2012.

    Default Thank you

    John:

Thank you for the reply. Looks like I'm in the market for a new helmet.

    Default SA2000

According to the 2011 GCR- 9.3.20 Driver's Safety Equipment. Page 86 c.2 blah blah.
Snell 2000 helmets are still legal after 2011. The only changes are the requirement for a HNR as of 1/1/2012.

At least that's the way I read it. Remeber, these are 2011 rules, but they mention the HNR requirement after 2011. Nothing about SA2000 helmets being no longer legal.

I don't have it in front of me but I bet the wording is more along the lines of

The current and one former snell standard are allowed.

This last year they had the 2000 stil on the books because helmet mfrs are/were slow to ramp up production and some companies didn't have helmets in stock until mid-year.

From the recommended rule changes for 2012 (strikeouts in blue):

    #6033 – October
In 9.3.20.C.2, change as follows: "Crash helmets approved by the Snell
Foundation with Snell sticker 2000 2005 or later Special Application (SA2000
SA2005) or SAH2010, or by the SFI with a SFI Sticker 31.1a for open faced
helmets and a SFI sticker 31.2a for closed faced (if purchased prior to
    12/31/04), SFI
31.1 (if purchased after 1/1/05), or by the FIA standard 8860-
2004 or later, or British Standards Institute BS6658-85 type A/FR."

Does "recommended rules changes" mean that they are not finalized? Or, are they finalized?

Pretty sure the BoD is going to pass this type of recommended rules change, if they have not already. They are not asking for member input to do otherwise. Its not a democracy...nor probably should it be for these types of changes that have historical precedence.

I would be EXTREMELY shocked if 2000 helmets were allowed next year. Never been the case in the past once current models were being fully produced.

I'd look for a new helmet. There are still some 05 helmets out there.

Speedware has a good stash of Arai 05, 05 Bell's are spread throughout a bunch of vendors.

Some places are regularly putting the older helmets up on Ebay too.

Hey- I'm all for the rules phasing out SA2000 helmets. I was just pointing out these rules as I saw them in the GCR.

If there is a proposal for these rules to be changed, great.
