    Default Race 7 report

Pancea goes Flag-to-Flag to win at Portland

Portland International Raceway -(July 2, 2011) Lucian Pancea took his first win of the season in race 7 of the 2011 F1000 Pro Series sponsored by Goodyear Racing Tires, Williams Racing Developments and George Dean Engines with partner sponsors Hyperco, Jongbloed Racing Wheels, Ballistic Performance Components, Elizabeth Jackson Artwork, and Geartronics North America.

Pancea who started on pole was never headed as he lead from flag-to-flag to take adominant win.

Under clear blue skies and warm temperatures, the F1000 field took the split start some 40 seconds ahead of the main field of national competitors.

At the end of the first lap it was Pancea leading with Oberndorf leapfrogging both N.Belling and Vollum at the start running second. Close behind was Vollum followed by Palmer, N. Belling, and the rest of the field. Pancea, Oberndorf, and Vollum were running nose to tail and already begining to stretch out some distance between them and fourth place runner Palmer who had also managed to advance past N. Belling. The running order was Pancea, Oberndorf, Vollum, Palmer, N.Belling, Werner, Archer, LaBrie, M.Belling, and Rice.

As the cars exited the chicane Oberndorf suddenly slowed with electrical issues finally rolling to a stop midways towards turn 3. This brought out a double yellow caution that bunched the field up. As the the caution ended on lap 4 and the green flag came out Pancea streaked out from the field followed closely by Vollum.

For the next several laps Vollum crowded Pancea's mirrors looking for an opening to get by. Lap after lap Vollum would pull alongside Pancea heading down into the chicane only to find Pancea arriving just ahead of him.

The battle was interrupted again by a second double yellow caution on lap 7. As the pace car came out of the pits and bypassed the chicane it missed picking up race leaded Pancea and instead it was Vollum just behind the pace car. This lead to several laps where Pancea was forced to slow down before the pace car finally picked up the race leader.

As the green flag flew for the second restart N. Belling began to slow with a mechanical issue on the back straight. The bolts holding the sprocket had loosen and with the chain tension gone he began to lose drive. Evenually losing all drive in the car forcing his retirement.

Up front Pancea and Vollum resumed their battle. Each time Vollum pulled alongside at the chicane Pancea managed to fend him off. As the race progressed Pancea managed to use traffic to his advantage to pull out just enough of a lead over Vollum to keep Vollum behind him going into the chicane.

As the Checkered flag fell it was Pancea taking the win with Vollum less than a second back with the remainder of the field spread out over the course by several seconds.

Championship leader Dave Palmer drove a solid race to third to consolidate his championship points lead, Russ Werner moved up two positions from his sixth starting position to claim fourth. Taylor Archer competing in his first series event and his first race in more than a year took fifth, with Rod Rice limping his ill-handling car into sixth. John LaBrie continued to improve his driving finishing a seventh with Mark Belling rounding out the field of runners in eighth. Herman Pahls declined to take the race start.

Flag Confusion helps Vollum to Victory at Portland

Portland International Raceway -(July 3, 2011) Larry Vollum assisted by some confusion over a white flag took his first win of the season in Race 8 of the 2011 F1000 Pro Series sponsored by Goodyear Racing Tires, Williams Racing Developments and George Dean Engines with partner sponsors Hyperco, Jongbloed Racing Wheels, Ballistic Performance Components, Elizabeth Jackson Artwork, and Geartronics North America.

The race began under partly cloudy skies and warm conditions. The field of F1000 taking the green flag some 30 seconds ahead of the main field of national competitors.

Pole sitter Vollum lead the field through the chicane, but was quickly overtaken by both Archer and Pancea. As the field came around after the first lap it was Pancea in the lead closely followed by both Archer and Vollum. Entering into the chicane on the 3rd lap Archer dived into the inside taking the lead from Pancea.

The racing up front became fast and furious for the next several laps as the three ran in a very tight pattern with each driver within striking distance of each other with Archer desperately trying to hold off Pancea and Vollum.

As the race worn on Pancea found himself in trouble. Having made a gamble on setup, Pancea now found the car slower and not as well behaved as the day before. Vollum exploited this as he copied Archer's move on Pancea into the chicane. Pancea knew he was in trouble but there was nothing he could do but hold on as he continued his slide down the field.

After yesterday's loose sprocket issue Nicholas Belling found the car more to his liking and begin to pull his way up through the field from his sixth starting position. As he took over third place from the falling Pancea he was several seconds behind the lead duo of Archer and Vollum. Lap after lap saw him close the gap between him and Vollum until he was just more than a second back.

Up front Vollum was giving Archer everything he could to get pass with Archer continuing to deny Vollum the lead with every move Vollum tried.

It was all to be taken completely out of the hands of the drivers. As tow trucks rolled to assist a stalled car from a competitor from the main national group, the white flag came out. Archer, after being away from racing for more than a year, mistook the the white flag for having the same meaning as a yellow flag. As he slowed for the incident he was passed by both Vollum and N. Belling. As Archer realized his mistake he tried to regain position but it was too late. The damage had been done and the race was lost.

Vollum continued on to take the checkered flag and his first victory with N. Belling several seconds behind. Archer followed the two across the line in third.

The remainder of the field followed with Russ Werner in fifth, Dave Palmer adding to his points total in 5th, Pancea in sixth, with Oberndorf seventh. After dueling most of the race with M.Belling, LaBrie took eighth, with M.Belling ninth, Rice with his still diabolical car tenth, and Pahls failing to finish in eleventh.

2011 F1000 Pro Series Driver's Championship to be decided at Miller

Fremont, Ca - (July 6, 2011) - With points now amended for Seattle's Race 5 the 2011 F1000 Pro Series Drivers championship is now down to two drivers.

Dave Palmer of Portland, Oregon currently leads the championship with 60 points. In second is Nicholas Belling with 47. With 13 points separating the two, Belling needs at least a second place and a sixth place to tie Palmer in points.

In the case of a tie the championship will be awarded on the basis of best finishing positions. Currently, both drivers have one win and two 2nd place finishes, with Palmer an additional two third place finishes. Under this scenerio Belling would need that second place finish to edge out Palmer for the title. Anything less and Palmer will become champion.

Points are awarded for first through 9th as follows: 12-9-7-6-5-4-3-2-1

Each driver accumulated points through all eight races in the following manner:

    Palmer: 12+7+9+9+6+5+7+5 = 60

    Belling: 1+9+12+0+9+6+1+9 = 47

The championship driver will be awarded the 2011 Driver's Championship trophy as well as a cash prize and other contingency awards as the championship driver.

I'm currently trying to get additional photos to post from Sunday's race. We are currently working on getting the F1000 Pro Series website updated and will post all the photos there soon.

Thanks to all that attended the Portland event. We look forward to seeing you at Miller where we hope to break a record for the largest F1000 field ever.

    See you all then.
