    Default GSXR Woes

    After popping a perfectly good motor at Road ATL recently (looks like I was simply low on oil ) and struggling to get the oil pump to prime in the one we swapped in on Saturday night at the track, my "new" eBay motor showed up this week. It is supposedly an 800 miles motor, but the residual oil in there looked a little older than that... So, I installed it this morning and fired it up. It popped, sputtered, and backfired, and wouldn't idle, but the oil pressure jumped right up.

    Then I noticed that it was pumping the oil out the clutch actuater pin hole. This is probably not a good thing.

    Any ideas?

    Hey George, a few things.
    It's normal for oil to come out the clutch pushrod seal hole in the 1000, so just stick the pushrod back in.
    To get the oil pump to prime you might have some success at loosening the oil filter and turn over the engine, ign off.
    When putting a new engine together, you can prime the oil pump by hand prior to installing the clutch (last thing) on the 1000, not sure if the 600 drives the oil pump offa the back of the clutch basket like on the 1.0L bike...

    As for the popping and non idling - fuel pressure, clogged injectors, are plugs wet?

    Thanks Coop. I checked the it with the shaft installed and guess what... plug the hole and oil doesn't come out... (feelin' a little stoopid on that one...)

    On the "new" motor (good oil pressure, popping, backfiring, flames shooting out the intake) I never disconnected the harness, fuel rail, etc. I just laid it all back, drained the oil and swapped motors. It acts like the timing is way off. I'm wondering if my "800 mile motor" might have a little more time/wear on it and the cam might be off or something.

    I'm going to drop Clint's motor back in tomorrow (ran fine, but didn't have oil pressure). If it fires up, I'll pull the clutch basket out and try to prime it.

    I'm not sure what the Suzuki motor looks like compared to the Kawasaki I ran, but I made a simple fixture so I could use a drill to turn the oil pumps (main and scavenge) before putting the clutch basket in. It was nice being able to confirm it all worked well before buttoning it up and going to the track.

    You can also try shooting compressed air into the vent port when trying to prime it. I didn't believe it either but it worked.

    It's all good! Runs great, good oil pressure, back together, and ready to go to Roebling for the 4th of July!
