Default Halon 1211 Refill - East Coast?

I've searched the forum, and read all the Halon recharge posts. Most are at least a few years old. Has anyone had any luck with a refill recently on the east coast? My 5 lb RaceTech bottle is below the green on the pressure gauge, and only weighs about 5 1/2 pounds. I suspect I need about 2-2 1/2 pounds.

I know I can replace the system with a variety of modern, more EPA friendly systems, but figured I'd give this a shot before buying a new AFFF system.

    Thanks!

Thanks for the replies. I've sent correspondence off to them all. It will be interesting to see who still does it, and how much the service is. I may find out that it's not that much less expensive than just buying a new system.

    Hopefully it will be reasonable.

    Default halon

I tried no one will ship refilled Halon tanks. You need to either buy a new tank or system. If your tank is older than 10 yrs it is doubtful they will refill. Transatlantic will refill but you need to pickup, no shipping. I would contact Ben at Transatlantic he was very helpful.

The answer from Safe Craft and Safety Systems (firebottle) was that they would not recharge any other manufacturers extinguisher.

I guess I'll be adding a new extinguisher to the budget. Somehow I don't think I'll be mentioning this to the misses today. I am not sure the $35 on flowers, and the $4 on a card is quite going to equal a new fire system.

    Default Halon 1211 refill

The bottle and head on the Racetech (like Lifeline) fire system is pretty light. The gauge has no bearing on it's contents, reads pressure only and thus is not a SCCA Tech requirement. The bottle pressure ready lower in cold weather, higher in hot.
Your system is only required to have 5 Lbs. of Halon in it to be legal.
Nothing knocks out a fire better than Halon.

Keith - Understood about the gauge, or lack of a need for one. The tank definitely has material in it, but it only weighs 5 lbs 4.2 oz. I can't read the full weight on the bottle but I'm assuming the empty container should weigh at least 2 lbs.

    Default Halon 1211

I don't remember, I never weight the bottle and head alone, just set the scale to add 5+ Lbs. of Halon and she was done. The bottle is the same German made unit, very thin wall, unlike those you see on most US fire bottles.

I carried my Halon bottle into Koorsen here in Indianapolis and, after a bunch of guys gathered to give their opinion, it was decided that my type of bottle can't be refilled. The only explanation I could get was "government regulation."

The government regulation refers to the requirement for DOT approval on refilling any pressure vessels.

this includes propane tanks for your gas grill, fire extingushers.

The sort of gray area that I have found is whether or not it is not according to Hoyle if it is refilled but not shipped and what pressure it is at.
