FE West Coast Championship: Aleckson Sweeps Series Opener at Thunderhill

Brandon Aleckson kicked of the 2011 Formula Enterprise West Coast Championship with a weekend sweep, taking the victory in Rounds One and Two at Thunderhill Raceway Park. Perennial title contender Jim Devenport of Bulldog Motorsports showed his prowess coming home with back to back runner up finishes.

Inclimate weather kept a few FE West Coast Championship regulars at home but those that braved the cold and rain saw plenty of close racing action. 2010 Championship winner Brandon Aleckson came into the weekend with a target on his back, as drivers battled to dethrone inaugural series Champion from his West Coast dominance. Leading the field to the green in Round One, Aleckson quickly showed his speed as he opened up 3 second lead by the end of lap one. Series newcomer Jerry Kroll battled with the 2010 runner-up Jim Devenport early on before spinning of course bringing out a full-course caution. On the ensuing restart, Devenport made an attempt for the lead into turn one but Aleckson was able to maintain as he walked away from the field for the Round One victory.

Round 2 again saw Aleckson lead the field to the green with Devenport and Kroll in pursuit. Aleckson and Devenport sped away from the field leaving Kroll, Lloyd Read, and John Yeatman to battle for the final podium position. The trio made multiple passes on each other putting on a great show for spectators. At the midway point, a full-course caution flew with the pace car splitting the field. Kroll was able to remain on the lead lap just ahead of the pacecar while Read and Yeatman were left to fight for 4th. Up front, Aleckson went on to claim his second victory of the weekend giving him a clean sweep. Jim Devenport and Jerry Kroll rounded out the top-three.

The bare facts make it look easy, but I was watching from the pit wall and I can assure you that Dan and Brandon worked for those victories.
