Probably none of you have ever heard of him. But, SCCA and all of us lost a terrific elderly gentleman and one of the clubs oldest (and longest) members last night.
Frank Manley, 91 years old and an ACTIVE member of SCCA, was an SCCA (FIA) race car driver for over 50 years with many, many marvelous racing stories to tell in the paddock from races around the world including, a shoulder rub for a while with the mighty Enzo.
After his not so brief (sic) stint as a driver he became a fine race steward here in the northwest and in the more recent years, he and his wife were 'driver services' at SCCA and SOVREN races. Even when it came time for a walker, there was Frank moving from the fence getting timing sheets (not setting any lap records) and taking care of business. He and his wife, Joan will be sorely missed on race weekends here in Seattle. He was a 'landmark' image to all of us.
Way back in 1950, Frank was a member of the "Wichita Sports Car Club" which later became the Wichita Region of the SCCA. Last November, Frank and Joan moved back to Kansas to be near family. He made it back to where it all began before it came to an end
The "Frank & Joan Manley Enthusiasts Award" is given each year to a Nortjhwest Reagion SCCA member..... who exhibits qualities of enthusiasm and willingness to be involved in Region activities....
