Guestimate cost of replacing the long block (scca legally)?

Being newbees to the class, I would like to know why a 14 race engine would need a rebuild?

    Thanks, Dale

I'd guess it must've got hot or ran short on oil. Over 40 races on mine and leakdown is still 4% or less...

    Best regards,

    Dale,

Eric has it right. Ran short on oil, threw a rod out the side of the block, and now needs a long block exchange. Buy the car! $26k is cheap.

According to Enterprises, an engine exchange costs $5200.00 plus shipping both ways. A complete brand new engine, not an exchange, costs $ 7300.00 plus shipping. This car needs an engine exchange, a front crush box, some kind of a steering shaft update and the latest and greatest MAP update. Car = $26,000, exchange = $5200, crush box = $1000, shipping = say $1000, total labor = say $1500. This adds up to $34700. A completely updated FE with a zero time motor with spares as mentioned for $34700. Looks like a pretty good deal to me!

    Default needs new motor

This car needs a new motor not an exchange. If you threw a rod out of the case
then they cant rebuild the motor. That would mean $7200 is a more realistic cost
to fix the motor problem. I dont think they will take a motor with a hole in the case
as an exchange. I could be wrong. That would bring the cost to almost 37K to run this
car. Which is not really that good of a deal compared to other cars out there.

A longblock exchange is not a rebuilt engine, the hole is of no mater. We use a brand new engine and exchange ancillary parts off your old engine. Again it is not a "rebuil " engine.

Like Jerry said, all FE engines coming back from Enterprises are new. A new engine has all new ancillary parts. An exchange engine is a new engine with your old ancillary parts, plus an R&R oil pump ($275 in addition to the $5200 and is required). A reman engine is a new engine with used ancillary parts (not sure if any have been built yet, probably because of a lack of used ancillary parts as racers have been getting theirs back with exchanges). Again, the recurring theme here is NEW engine.

Looks to me like you'd have a fairly low time car with a new engine, 2nd set of wheels with rains and some minor spares for around $35K. Probably in the range of what's out there.

Thank you Jerry and Steve for your help in clairfying things for those people who are concerned about the concept of "exchange". In my two conversations with Shannon ( Enterprises engine man) regarding this car and this engine, an exchange is what he has indicated would be needed. He did not refer to the oil pump R&R as an additional expense, but he is the engine man after all. If I had spoken with Jerry he probably would have, and I certainly agree it would be a necessary thing to do.
I personally think this would be the least expensive choice to get an FE with spares and a new zero time engine.
Thank you again Jerry and Steve for your input.

I saw this bumped back up and was secretly hoping that it was Eric picking up the car before I opened it. It immediately came to mind when I saw pics of his car.

Glad that you'll be back on track soon.

Yep it's me! Thanks Joe and Keith. And of course, thank you Bill for being such a gentleman in the deal. Check went in the FEDEX the day before I left for Guam. Tilden Kinlaw (the FE driver and good friend who drove my rig home from VIR for me) has offered to go pick it up while I am away, so I'll talk to him and Bill Herscher and work that out. I am hoping to make #0046 look like #0044 used to, set it up, shake it down, and make it up for the June Sprints. A pretty lofty goal, but as I have been continually reminded through this experience, I have LOTS of friends (God only knows why ) and I think we can get it pulled off. I look forward to meeting some of you that I have not met before at the Sprints.

    Best regards,
    Eric
