Default Phoenix to Unveil New Car

Phoenix Race Works, LLC will unveil its newest creation, the F1k.09, at the Willow Springs National Race on February 21-22. This is the second generation F1000 produced by the Phoenix based company specifically for the SCCA FB class (F1000).

Phoenix will be racing the car if the required homologation paperwork is received from the SCCA national office in time. "Even if we don’t get the papers in time, we will still have the car at the track,” said Dustin Wright, Engineer and Manager of Phoenix Race Works, "we are way too excited about this car to not show it off!" he continued. “Of course, I would much rather we race.”

For more information about the company and the car please see the Phoenix Race Works, LLC website at the link below:

I'm excited for you, Dustin. I know you've worked a lot on it, and it sure sounds like it will be a great car. I'm hoping we'll get to see a picture of it next to another FB car for comparison.

Dustin, you can request a temporary letter that will allow you to race 2 races while your homologation is in process. We have done this a couple of times. Since you are an established builder I would be suprised if they did not grant you a temporary letter for 2 races.

Call the club & talk to John Bauer. John is the new Tech Director for Club Racing.

Default Can't wait to see it completed

    Hi All
I've been machining some really trick parts for this car for about the last 3 months....some of the stuff I've machined for it actually make me jealous that I didn't design them myself.

Having been in the CNC machine shop business nearly my entire adult life I've been fortunate to work with and for some really creative people. I put Dustin right at the top of that heap.

    Default Thanks

    Jay,
I left a message on John's voice mail last week, and have not got a phone call back yet.
Thanks for the tip about the two race letter, I was aware of this option, but I thought that you could only apply for the letter if the car was not a new design.

    Gary,
Thanks for the kind words. I have enjoyed working with you as well, and your advice has helped to make our machined components even better.

I will try to get some pictures of trick parts up tomorrow.

I too cannot wait to see the car on grid, next to other FB designs. What a cool class, full of talented and energetic people. It is good time to be in the SCCA, and I feel lucky to get to play a small role in helping to build this new class. Thanks again for everybody's support!

    Default Tric Pics

Here are pictures of some parts that Gary has machined up for us. Gary supplied the pictures of these parts while in progress.

I have a new wheel hub design that combines several components into one. The new hub is substantially lighter and stiffer than the traditional 2 piece design that has a separate wheel hub and a stub axle. I have combined the tripod housing and the wheel hub into one part. The new larger diameter hub will use two bearings spaced nearly 2” apart. The distance between the bearings will decrease bearing load, increase stiffness and increase bearing life. The new design uses two thin section angular contact ball bearings, whose total weight is one half that of the traditional automotive style double row cartage bearing. These parts will come standard on the new F1000. The parts will also be available for the home builder and conversions.

Thanks again Gary for helping me to figure out how to tolerance and make descent drawings for these and other parts.

    Default Oh what fun

So Dustin...is it ok if a set of these just happen to migrate onto my car? Man I could sure use the 15 lb. weight reduction that these will give me. Then maybe I can keep up with Jaremko.

Just gotta let you folks know I had to pull out all of my lathe skills to machine these....lets just say they were a B&^%&** to make.

Oh and mine won't have the Tripod pocket in the front....can you say even more weight reduction.

    Gary,
To keep up with Mark you'll have get a new F1k.09, I'll leave the hubs off your copy. Thanks again for machining such nice parts! I think it would be cool to see them run on your car.

But seriously, the light weight parts are one of the reasons why the new car is a scant 725 lb.

    Default Material

I thought that AISI 4340 Steel, oil quenched at 800deg C (1470 deg F), and 595 deg C(1100 deg F) temper should get the job done. Basically; I just asked the heat treat shop for 32 HRC through.

    Default Pricing

We have a new wheel center design to match the drive pin and wheel nut requirements, as well as a steel bearing housing that can be welded into a fabricated steel upright. The uprights on our new F1000 are going to be sheet metal fabricated units, as they will be both lighter and stiffer than billet aluminum ones. Since I am the welder, they will cost far less too. We have not yet determined the pricing on the upright or wheel center. The prices of the other components are listed below; please note the pricing is subject to change.

Wheel nut: Right or Left hand thread, hard anodized red or green ……….$93.00
Wheel hub: Right or Left hand thread…………………………………… …………..…$573.75
Inner Retaining Ring: Hard anodized…………………………………… ………………….$68.25
    Bearing Pre-Load Spacer…………………………………… …………………………………..$19.75
FSAE only Wheel bearing (2 needed per hub)………………………………………. .$48.75
    Wheel bearing (2 needed per hub)……………………………………… …………....$112.50

We have calculated the weight savings to be over 20 pounds when changing from the old 2 piece wheel hubs, CV's, half shafts, wheel bearings, and uprights, to the new spec stuff. The hubs fit the Taylor Race Engineering tripods, so you can get half shafts in almost any length you need for an awesome price.
To get the most out of the light weight parts we can design custom uprights in either steel fabrication or billet aluminum specifically to your needs.
Imagine shedding 20 pounds of un-sprung rotating weight.

I'm just a lowly CFF driver, but also an auto engineer. (please buy a car for the street)

But anyway, beautiful parts. How do you go about programming the tripod pocket? Is it something you have to reverse engineer or is it some standard?

I'll be watching for your cars. In my rearview mirror to get out of the way for them.

    Default Pocket

We took very accurate measurements of an existing tripod housing and used measured drawings from the manufactures of tripod housings to cad model our housing. We used a tripod to test fit the pocket after machining, just to make sure we got it right.

    Default Wear

    RobLav,

We have run the Taylor Race Engineering tripod housings for literally thousands and thousands of miles, with no appreciable loss of tolerance. I would think that the new hubs should do just as well, as they are just as well manufactured.

    Lee,

Our big nuts only require big sockets. We will offer an aluminum socket, hard anodized black.

I was referring to the torque required on big nuts, usually 250-300ftlbs are needed.
Not many people carry that size torque wrench.

    Default Torque Required

The nuts will be torqued to 175 ft-lb; not all that much higher than the old wheel nuts. We will be using the same size wheel wrench we have always used.

    175?

Please consider the lack of strain in a stub axle of that diameter. The energy of this joint will be far below that of a centerlock VD, etc. You will need to step up that torque spec to prevent loosening.

    Otherwise, looks pretty good!

Good point, I will look at my numbers again.

The wheel nuts on a Dallara Indy lights only get torqued to 225 ft-lb and they are much larger than our new nuts.

As promised we went to Willow Springs with the new car. The car received lots of attention all weekend. We handed out ALL of the information we had printed up about the car and class, we talked with a bunch of people, and hopefully got some more buzz going for F1000. We will be racing the car at Thunder Hill in March. It will also be the first time the car is ever on track, we are gonna jump right in, head first.

Below are some pictures I took early Saturday morning.

    Default Weight

Wet ready to run with 2 gallons of fuel in the cell, the car came in at 763 lb, despite adding 9 lb of steel tubes around the driver, and 8 layers of Kevlar between the front bulk head and main roll hoop. The decals, bead seat, and radio might add a few more pounds.
We put it on the scale pad after our first test fire, obviously we still needed to adjust our cross weights.

It will be fun move the ballast around, and play with our weight distribution.

Our community includes all major purpose-built road racing classes, like the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and various pro series across North America and beyond. At ApexSpeed, we're passionate about amateur motorsports and are dedicated to helping our community have fun and grow while creating lasting memories on and off the track.
