Default Hewland/Webster gear help needed....

Can everyone help me identify MK8/9 gears?

How did Hewland i.d. gears?
How did Webster i.d. gears?
What does "M" mean or is it "W"?
Was there a "S" i.d.?
Which ones are the strongest?
Any other things I should be aware of?
Which should go with the 2liter S2000 and the FF1600 for strength?

Don't have the thread, but I saved this from one of Craig Taylor's previous posts:

1. Gear manufacturing industry standard is to mark the gear with its own number of teeth followed by the number of teeth of its mate. Hence the driver gear (internally splined) would be marked 21:31, and its driven gear mate (with dog lugs) would be marked 31:21. Hewland chose to deviate from the standard marking in the hopes of reducing confusion with racers. Webster chose to use the industry standard.

2. Gears must be run as a matched pair. A 21-tooth driver gear from a 21:30 set must not be run with a driven gear from a 21:31 or 21:29 set. At best it will not assemble in the gearbox because of difference in diameter. At worst is a broken gear. This is why gears are sold in matched pairs.

3. What you can learn from gear names Webster and Hewland:

20:31 No other markings Hewland gear of early lineage. Material English versions of 8620 or 9310 if late. However no marking identifiers.

20W31 Webster Gearset, prior to 1986 material 8620

20W31 with date (11/87 example) Webster gearset post 1986, 8620 material.

20W31S with date 1991 or later Webster "s" gearset, upgraded machining, hobbing and grinding facilities introduced. Material 8620.

20M31S (also dated 1993 or later) Webster "s" gearset with material change to 9310.

20 31 M Hewland gearset late tooth design, English version of 9310 steel.

20 31 N Hewland gearset with latest tooth design, english version of 9310 steel. (These are still rare, except in MK5)

For FF 1600 any MK gearset is suitable because of the restricted power. For F/S2000, SV, or any car over 120 HP, only the Webster M or Hewland M or N gears are suitable. Others WILL BE BROKEN.

Hewland Gears are “STAMPED”
Webster Gears are “ETCHED”

LD200 gears : regular/standard = ~.540” wide = .620”

Default Gears

So etched gears that say Hewland or "H" are really Webster?

Question on relative strength/adequacy:

Autocross FF1600 with standing starts and no clutch up and down shifts on hot Hoosier 25B's with no time for rev matching:

I have a 16 W 35 dated 07 90 and a 16 M 36 S dated about 09 93.

From PF's post both are Websters I assume.

Any comments on which would be stronger given the tendency for autocrossers to break 16 tooth gears? Would I be "better off" simply buying a new "latest and greatest"? If so, Hewland or Webster?

Also, Webster versus Hewland dog rings in this application?

Thanks!

Dick

Either way you'll want the dogs with the width cut down on the dogs for faster engagement.

How can they sell for $100 each? Half the price of Hewland or Webster and still be made in the USA/UK?

I don't know, I guess you could call him and find out.
We've purchased several of the Lola uprights and they've been fantastic.

They're made in the USA. If you want to pay more, I'm sure that Wayne will take your money.

Less money sounds good to me. Just trying to get some idea if it too good to be true.

Who shifts less in a season of autocrossing than a road racer does in one race . . . but with a lot less skill in my case.

It's true. I installed their dogs before Packwood, so far so good. Great customer service too.
