    Default Hewland-VW case machining

Time to recase my Mk9. What machine work and specs are necessary for the VW case? I’m sure it’s somewhere on Apex, just cannot find it. Thanks!

    Richard;

I am fairly sure it is only the reverse spigot hole.

    Default Match what you're replacing.

Did this on my March SV a few years ago...used a Rhino (alum) case. Easiest way is to pull cluster and look at old case. Need to flycut a section around inside to clear reverse...think it needed to go deeper, but don't exactly reacall how much... Just match up what your replacing.. You can do it on a bridgeport/mill if you have one and decent cutter...... I also had to cut some ribs outside/bottom to fit the cast magnesium for lower mount and believe another relief on top someplace, but think those were stuff unique to March.

Scotty Young sells a brand new rhino case, fully machined for $750. Not really worth fighting the fight to buy a case (for only slightly less) then machine it. Plus Scotty is an awfully nice fella who looks after our community.

Scotty is a great guy. However, I only spent about $350 on my case +shipping....did my own machine work. Had Williams doing the rest of re-casing. With those external mods. needed, easier done first.

If you're looking to re-case, I'd suggest: check with Scotty about just doing it all. He has stuff/skills to set pinion, side clearances, forks...and do it right...check all the rest..... might just be cheapest to just have him do it all? Tough if you lack tooling (undersized side brg. cones for setup)/shims/studs/metric stop nuts/etc....

Of course shipping could be a killer too.

    Good luck.

Check the pinion bearing location in your current case as there are two types:
    - 4 bolt
    - threaded collar
To transfer all the internals over directly you will need to source the same type. Otherwise there are several parts that will need to be changed.

The Rhino cases are 4-bolt only so, if yours has the collar retention for the bearing, it is not a direct replacement.

Case machining on both types is the same.

Lots of great information. Thank you very much.
I have a good threaded collar donor case, a Bridgeport and very good transmission tech.
Dimension to cut the reverse spigot and parts sources would be appreciated.

Reverse spigot relief depth can be measured from your old case. That way you can be sure of compatibility.

The threaded collar is a std. VW part, made by INA and others. P/n. is 712 1586 100

The small roller bearing is also INA, p/n. F52867

Best thing to do in this circumstances is to let a pro do it from start to finish.

    1. You are going to get a good job.
    2. If there are any issues you know exactly who to contact to get them fixed.

    I concur with Steve.

Major players, not in any particular order: Scott Church at Gear Daddies; Lee Williams at WRD; and Scott Young at Scot Young Enterprises.

Each of these Fellas has built either a killer MK-9 or an LD-200 for me.

Masters of their trade, and gentlemen in every respect.
