Still have my '83 Emmick Star-Yammie, but it'll be in my grave.

You may try Brad at IMI Motorsports near Denver. Bet he's got some KTs, know he has a pile of Komets, Atlases, clutches, pipes, etc. -- and he ships stuff every day.

Doubt he has a road race kart (what they're called these days) but may know of one. Employees will know little about it all compared to Brad, he's been in the karting biz for forty years.

Tell him Eric sent you, or tell his employees his friend Eric sent you. He can be tough to reach. If no luck getting him, PM me for his cell or I can ask.

    303-833-4949.

Some other resources are Mark Dismore at Comet Kart, perhaps Emmick or Hartman if still around, or the IKF itself.

I spoke with Brad on your behalf. No KTs, but has two vintage road race karts, one with a Komet.

Very vintage, he said "may be too old to race safely."

    Hi Daryl,

It's an old engine that we have had since the early 2000s, not sure what cylinder is in it.

We have new pistons and rings for the engine.
The engine is currently in pieces and hasn't been used for 10 years but my father (James Lee) can put it together in a couple of hours.

I don't have an exact number, but I think this engine is around 19hp.
The $450 includes us running through it, tuning it and breaking it in for you, it does not include shipping.

If you want something ready to go, we also have the two 2014 rotax tonykarts for sale...

If it was a NEW engine in the early 2000's it's one of the later cylinders (787 style) which came with slightly better porting for the open pipe classes, but not as desirable for restricted pipe classes.

Thank you very much for your insight,

Restricted as in for a jr. category?

Anyway $450 for a kart engine is a massive steal...

All of the various "non tuned pipe" classes with and without inlet restrictors. It's likely difficult to find an original / early style cylinder that hasn't been ported. Once the rule was put in place to allow some porting in an attempt to make the old style cylinder on equal footing to the newer cylinder most folks took advantage of that, until they found that the untouched early cylinders were preferable in those other KT classes.

An untouched, freshly rebuilt old style motor complete with carb, mount and clutch would be worth twice your asking price.

I raced karts with the original KT100 over the early '80s, and the Gen 2 version in 2001.

A couple clues I can throw in... the Gen 1 power band stopped pretty quickly at about 12,800 and the Gen 2 pulled strong to mid-13s.

The Gen 1 version also lost power above 280 degrees whereas the Gen 2 ran strong to 330+.

I am sure the Gen 1 engines had 15-16 horsepower, the Gen 2s I was never sure but told 18-19.

Based on Jonathan's description I suspect it's a Gen 2 -- at a very good price. I think I paid $600+ for a used but very strong Gen 2 in 2001 money, built by Wolter if recalling correctly.

My old, mothballed Emmick Star has an unmolested Gen 1 on it, bought new in '83.

If I were looking for a KT now, I'd have already bought the one offered above. Plus, Jonathan's Dad is a really good guy.

Lay down and have a blast.

Portland Karting Club has a Portland event in October. Russ always had extra carts, I rented 1 a couple weekends a few years ago. Might be worth checking out.

Those rpm power curve numbers and target temps were largely dependent on pipe, header and flex length and less so with the cylinder used. There was more discrepancy in the Gen 1 motors between transfer port heights and exhaust port height, with no grinding of ports allowed back then there were good, better and best cylinders in circulation. When the Gen 2 cylinders came out the transfer port and exhaust port heights were much, much more consistent from one cylinder to another and pretty much everybody could have a "best" cylinder. At some point after I stopped karting rules were put in place that allowed grinding of one port on the Gen 1 cylinders in an attempt to equalize them to the Gen 2 motor.
