Well it's time to kick off the 2018 NWFC season with 3 races at Spokane county raceways.
Zetec Class
It's always hard to bet against Greg Coffin at his home race weekend, with wins every year for as long as we can remember more of the same is expected in 2018. His main challengers will be a group of previous Spokane winners led by 2016 NWFC champ Gavin Aitken with a season behind him in his new car watch for Gavin to bring home at least one victory this weekend and probably a pair of podiums to go with it. Roger Smetaniuk was kept off the top step of the podium last year by a tire going down on the last lap but watch for a return to the Spokane podium for the #16 Mygale. Steve Ross missed last seasons races at Spokane but with new lump in the back of the #72 Van Diemen he looks to return to the podium early and often in 2018. Russ Werner led the Championship after the first event in 2017 but will he be able to repeat that feat in 2018? Watch for Russ to make a run at the podium but where on the podium might depend on how well he does in qualifying. Next up is a pair of drivers who spent last season on the early generation of American Racers so watch for these 2 to close the gap to the front group and possibly join it. Scott Morton had a 3rd 4th and 5th at Spokane last season so he will be looking to repeat or improve on that. Brian Smetaniuk struggled even more on the AR's as he was nearly 3 seconds off his usual pace so watch for a marked improvement out of him. The new comer and unknown to the zetec class will be Mike Webb coming from a 97 Van Diemen to a 2008 so he could be a driver to watch as he might be able to mix up the standings a bit before the weekend closes out.
Pinto Class
Reny Follett has dominated the pinto class at Spokane over the past 2 seasons and took his first overall win here just last season. If the car stays together and there is enough gas in the tank he should be a good bet for 3 class wins. The fight for the rest of the podium could end up an all Team Hot Potato race as 2017 NWFC Champ Wade Anderson will have competition coming at him from mostly his teammates. Glenn Yuen returns to action after missing the 2017 season due to injury and looks to take the fight to the front of the pinto field. He has shown the pace over a single lap in Spokane but we will see how quickly he can come back up to speed in 2018. Doug Connon will be moving over to a 1997 Van Diemen from his usual 1994 car so this could lead to some early teething but hopefully after Thursday practice he should have it nailed down and ready to push his teammates. Jason Gillen had begun to pick up speed mid season last year at Mission so hopefully he will be able to carry that through to a strong start for 2018. Look for Jason to try and hunt down Doug Connon as he gets familiar with a new car. The unkowns in the pinto class are Brad Smith as he is trying to get his Citation back together early this week so if he can make it out he might be able to sneak up into podium contention if all goes well. Local driver James Sharp usually has some officiating duties over the weekend that keep him out of the races but hopefully he make a Sunday start and maybe push Jason Gillen around for some good racing.
Overall
The Top 5 could be a close call Greg Coffin chased by former race winners Gavin Aitken, Roger Smetaniuk and Reny Follett plus the added danger of the quick Russ Werner. We can see any of the 5 mentioned drivers taking one or more wins this weekend but if that lead group gets into trouble right behind them Steve Ross and Scott Morton should be ready to pounce and take there place.
Thursday test day in the books no big issues for anyone.
News going into the weekend is Reny is out (motor) Mike Hilliker is in with a surprise entry. So the Pinto race is up for grabs.

Quali 1 results
Morton’s axel has an issue
Roger’s transponder didn’t get picked up by timing and scoring
will update when more is known.
Still awaiting full details and time card.
Coffin and Aitken go back and forth until a black flag halts the race. After the flag they continue to battle now with Werner right behind them. Aitken spins, Werner and Coffin exchange the lead a few times with Werner making the last of the passes to come out on top in the first race of 2018. I have no idea how the pinto’s did yet.
What were the tires used
I think it was Glenn who took first in Pinto 5th overall.
Results from yesterday’s race:
Also, looks like the above live timing link has issues this year, so check out the race hero app for live timing
Today’s race results
They have been having issues with the timing loop all weekend so I think the results posted will change. Glenn Yuen and Brian Smetaniuk seem to be most affected.

Qualy for Sunday's feature race.
Are there any RAYNARD's running in the series???
CREW for Jeff 89 Reynard or Flag & Comm.
No Reynards yet there are 2 out in Sask that keep threatening to come out to the Castrol event but haven't seen them yet.
didn't you ugys have a bunch of early to mid-90s VDs as well? What happened to them?
Just as you guys were getting this series going we had TWO Raynard's for sale for $12,000 for BOTH and couldn't find any takers. BIG loss to ICSCC as they were both good cars. Now, at least one of them is running the GLC series and under the care of Kieth Averill.
