    Default License Questions

    I had a few questions regarding running vintage events. Just looking for advice on which way to go.

    1. What are the requirements for a license to run in vintage.

    2. Is it better to have an SCCA license vs a vintage only license.

    3. Are Midwest Council licenses allowed as a crossover for Vintage.

    My opinion...

    Get an SCCA license with a waiver. With your credentials, it shouldn't be an issue.

    Then you can race in MWC as well.

    Brian - with your resume you'll be able to race with any vintage organization. Licensing is dramatically different from SCCA. for most vintage, your license is no additional fee. All VMC clubs accept licenses from other VMC member clubs. There's usually an additional charge for racing on another club's license, usually 50% of the cost of a membership - to encourage you to join if you are going to race often.

    Just call the club you intend to race with. Licensing and registration is usually done by a much smaller crew than even a SCCA regional, so there's little danger of being told one story by one person and getting a different one when you show up.

    Brian, typically no simple, one size fits all for your license questions. Since you are in the Midwest I assume you are interested in doing Vintage with VSCDA which is the Midwest Vintage club. If you want to race with SVRA the answers are a bit different and I can't speak for them.
    1) To get a vintage license with VSCDA you need to either go thru our school ( last weekend ) or do a pro school ( Skip B., Boundrant, etc ) or have credentials with another accepted race organization ( ie; MCSCC or SCCA ). If your school or other credentials are less than 2 years old you are pretty much set to go. You do need a medical.

    2)SCCA vs Vintage; that would really depend on what kind of car and where you want to race and how many races you intend on doing. SCCA might be a bit harder to get but it might open a few more doors.

    3) MCSCC license; Midwestern Council is a member of the VMC ( Vintage Motorsport Council ) so their license will be generally accepted by all vintage organizations; best to check but most do. VSCDA accepts MCSCC licenses.

    Somewhere, there used to be a list of clubs including the SCCA that had reciprocity agreements?
    CREW for Jeff 89 Reynard or Flag & Comm.

    Brian, just be aware that there are no SCCA Vintage races here in the midwest.
    You'd probably be spending more to get an SCCA license just to end up running with VSCDA or MCSCC.

    I carry two licenses for driving vintage cars. An SCCA and an FIA C-international. The SCCA license is good for every vintage event I've ever been asked to jump into a car, with the exception of the Masters HGP races which require the FIA license. I think all the VMC clubs http://www.the-vmc.com/member_orgs.htm will accept the SCCA license because it's sort of a known standard.

    The funny thing is, the FIA license I carry requires me to carry a full comp SCCA license. So in other words, it's basically a fee I have to pay to ACCUS telling them that I'm a dork that will shell out an additional $500 to carry a license that is basically no good without me also carrying another license. But for the vintage F1 stuff I need it, so who am I to argue...

    I wasn't considering that you might want to run outside the Midwest. Ethan is correct.
