Default The newest group of FV drivers is. - women?

With Laura Hayes gracing the cover of SportsCar, I ask this question:

Why are we not marketing FV to women?

I see women in IT and Spec Miata but I have not seen a female competitor in the NE since John P's daughter. (Stephanie Petillo)

I see Kim on the west coast and Lisa of course. Are there others?

    Are we missing something here?

This month's cover should be sent to every father whose daughter is running karts.

It should also be sent to every magazine catering to professionals.

    Default Cover Girl

At the August Daytona race...I was just behind her on the grid waiting to go out. I noticed her frantically getting out of the car, she jumps out and grabs something from the engine bay of the car ahead of her, throws it to the side and jumped back in the car. I'm not exactly sure what she was doing but she was obviously looking out for a fellow competitor. I thought that was awesome!!!

Okay, - I thought this topic would generate more interest than one reply - we get a FV AND driver on the front page of SportsCar, possibly reaching out to a entire new market, and we are still beating the spec tire to death?

    Sigh....back to swapping the tranny...

I am new here but I agree about beating the tire issue to death!
You know there is a cost to racing. Its not like ball and stick sports. Everyone knows that going in. So pick a tire and go racing...nobody seems to be talking about $7,500 motors!

I spent 20 years involved in USAC midget racing and it was the same thing there. We spent about 10 grand a year on tires but the motors was 12-14,000 and you need 3 of them!

They are always trying to control the wrong thing.

    Just my humble opinion.

A women driver, Marjorie Lundberg, finished 5th at he Runoffs last year at Laguna.

I wonder if she is the highest finishing women in FV runoffs history???

We've had many female FV drivers on the West Coast. Currently I know of three Kim Madrid from SoCal, Marjorie Lundberg from SoCal, but originally from the NW, and Cheryl Gilbert from the NW. We recently had one retire, she is Laura Andrade, who owns the track record at Thunderhill. We've had others, just can't remember their names, I blame it on age. Mine.

Novice lady... I'm interested. My husb is a Vee owner but I'd be a total novice for this one.
maybe you can tell by the questions I'm asking...He races hillclimbs and I've got the bug to get into a Vee too. I'm 5'5 150# and live in Pennsylvania.

How could we make this work for me? What would need to be done and how could I get it here?

What is the width of the cockpit opening at the narrowest to widest point?

Just thought I'd toss in a few more names to give credit where it's due...

Lisa Noble - OF COURSE !!
Cathy Barnhard - CenDiv 80's-90's, then off to Texas.
Cassandra (C.J.) Frazzale - CenDiv 80's, then off to West Coast.
Susan Smith - CenDiv 80's, then off to Florida
    Janet Mahoney - CenDiv 80's
Arlie Goldberg - West Coast 80's-?
    Anne Lockhardt - CenDiv 80's-?

    Debbie Maier - VSCDA present
    Tana Houlton - VSCDA present

So, it's really not an insult if you tell me I drive like a girl.

I believe "Dutch" Brow raced vee's in the 60's, 70's & 80's at Nelson Ledges
and Mid-Ohio? Unless I'm mistaken, she's still alive and in her 90's?

    the NEWEST group.........................

the history of female participants is interesting but 40, 30, 20 year old news LOL

one needs get some current "rock starlet" behind the wheel of a FV and get that experience played on mainstream media if you want to grow the class through that aspect

Laura is awesome, super talented and a ton of fun to race with. However, that track record was a glitch and SFR wont admit it. There is no way a vee could have ever run that time back then.

    Default Veering off topic??

One of the ideas of the the original post I think was how to present FV racing to up and coming lady drivers to grow the class.

    Ellery,

We have about 5 FV drivers that run in the Pennsylvania Hillclimb Association races. I run all the races and try to get a road race or two in. It's a really fun group (as most FV groups are). We run twice at Summit Point (Jefferson course and time trial format), twice in Weatherly PA, twice in Reading PA, and once in Wilkes Barre and once in Flintstone MD. You can go to the PHA website and get more information. Tammy Oswald ran with us in the Fall at Jefferson and took first place!!!!
