Default Is this suspension vintage legal ? (picture attached)

]Here's a picture of a D13 rear suspension on a car that I'm going to look at this weekend. I'm confused as to what's zero roll, what's vintage legal, etc. All I know is that this setup only has one shock/side. Could someone please tell me about this. I really want a vintage legal car. Mel

    Ha! Figured the picture out.

    From the Monoposto rules-

Vintage Formula Vee is a class for single seat racing cars based on
components from the standard Volkswagen 1200 series Type l, U.S.
model sedan, as originally manufactured and imported by VW from
1961 to 1965. Since it is a restricted class, all allowable modifications
are stated herein. Any Formula Vee manufactured prior to January 1,
1976, is eligible for Monoposto Racing Formula Vee provided it
complies with the following rules as used in 1969:
    A. No component of the engine, power train, front suspension, or
brakes shall be altered, modified or changed, nor be of other
than VW manufacture, unless specifically authorized herein.
    B. The bodywork is the original bodywork, or is substantially
identical to the bodywork installed when the car was originally
    manufactured.
    C. The car must originally have been manufactured two springs
and two shocks as the supporting devices for the rear
    suspension.
    D. There must be a VW fan shroud, working fan and working
charging system as described in paragraphs below.
    E. Minimum weight, without fuel or driver is 825 pounds,
wheelbase is minimum 81.5"; maximum 83.5" and track is front
51.4"; rear 50.7" [standard VW sedan]. A small tolerance is
allowed for cars using the permitted 4.5 inch rims. Overall
length is minimum 123" and maximum 127" with the body depth
at firewall: minimum 25"and maximum 34".

Even if it was built after 1976, if it is set up in a pre-1976 configuration with two shocks, working fan and charging system with treaded tires it should be Monoposto legal.

    Default Vintage legal

    Mel:

The suspension pictured has one shock per side and is as it was originally found on the D-13.

HOWEVER, I do not see a fan shroud so it would NOT be MONOPOSTO legal at this time without the fan. (see Bob's post earlier) It MIGHT be legal with some organizations however.

If you are inspecting a FV, and you are confused about whether it is zero-roll, try lifting a front wheel by hand. If you can lift it off the ground then it is zero-roll. If you cannot, then it is not zero-roll.

Thanks guys. Your helping me a lot. Yep, I tend to ask lots of questions.

I don't see a fan/shroud as too big an obstacle, as I understand the the D13 bodywork will accommodate one, and the parts should be reasonable. I can get an awesome chrome housing on ebay. Chrome=fast, right? I might have to move stuff around a bit, but I can handle that.

As far as what what vintage group I'll be with, I have to plea stupid at this point.

The owner thinks the car is an early to mid 70s vintage.

All in all looks to be a candidate for a starter car for what I'm hoping to do. Middle of the pack in vintage, towards the back in club, but never, ever last.

    Thanks again for the guidance.

A D-13 will be Monoposto legal with its original suspension.(and all the other details, of course).
Take your time and be sure to try the car on for size/comfort.
Different Vees have different seating positions.
There's nothing worse than finding out you're not comfortable after-the-fact and then trying to adjust YOURSELF to the car.
Take it from me - 6'3"/240# - too tall for most older Vees, too wide for most newer ones.

Take Dietmar up on his offer. He's a wealth of information; been involved in FV's since the beginning of time. Most importantly, he's willing to share much of what he knows just for asking!
