pro and cons on what you are using?

I have been thinking about building a better one too. I was going to go with either a good used sports car seat, or a aftermarket seat. I was thinking about using some square stock steel and welding it all together. A mount for the screen, pedals, and shifter next to the seat. I was also going to build a shelf for the tower on the side as well as some speaker mounts... then install in the man cave.

THat is a big question. If you have all the equipment, you already have a seat, you have the capability and your time is free, I think you can make a very cool cockpit. If you dont have all the stuff, the cockpits from rseat (rseat.net) and Visionracer are pretty nice. Rseat is about 500 bucks. Visionracer is 700 bucks or so.

I was looking into a Human Racing GT rig and I was really smitten, but they are pricey. Not compared to this hobby, but pricey nonetheless. THey asked me if I wanted to sell them in the US, but I wasnt convinced there is a market for high end simcockpits no matter how much I liked them.

Also, if you go over to InsideSimRacing, they have some videos of when they rate different cockpits. Its not the same as experiencing them, but if gives you an idea of how stiff they are and different fitting for people of different sizes.

Its pretty economical to make your own. There are some that use plastic drain pipe that appear quite nice as well!

    This what I made!

    Upright is fine for SM...
Drive around rural Georgia until you find something like this in a barn. Cut off the rear, remove the front suspension, bolt some soft harbor freight wheels under it, mount screen on front bulkhead.....

I use the Fanatec Rennsport Cockpit and have several VisionRacer VR3's. The VR3 in powder coated black is a great platform, IMO.

Human Racer looks cool, but heard of delivery delays. Heck, I waited months for the Rennsport Cockpit!

Man, I should have set up a driving game on a display system we had here @ work. Several years ago we were doing human factors studies for UAV applications and I spec'd out a display system that BAE built for us.

There were 4 displays of 3000 pixles high by 2000 wide in a fixture that included lexan lenses that optically removed the frames between the panels resulting in a panoramic display of 3000 x 8000. At 18-24" viewing distance you had near immersion at natural eye reolution. Each display took two gamer cards, so we had eight cards in a high end passive-motherboard PC.

The diplays started to fail, the supplier had been absorbed by another company and the driver boards were no longer available so I surplused all of it late last year. But it was cool while it lasted.

Playseats seem to be priced right, about $3-400, a G27 wheel, a projector and white wall. Probably less then $1200 total. Add the butt kickers for the added effect.

I have the manual pull down screen at 120".

The Obutto is a pretty nice unit. Very comfortable, no matter what you're size, and actually can be used a a regular desk too.
