    Here is the full announcement:

Atlantic Championship Series Launching for 2012

    Dec. 15, 2011

Sharon, CT – Formula Race Promotions has announced the formation of the Atlantic Championship Series for SCCA-legal Formula Atlantic race cars. The Series will be run in conjunction with the highly successful F2000 Championship Series and F1600 Formula F Championship Series, sanctioned by SCCA Pro Racing. A six-round, three-event Championship is planned for 2012.

The year will open May 10 – 12 at Road Atlanta with F2000 and Formula Drift, followed by a trip to New Jersey Motorsports Park, June 29 – July 1, with ARCA, TransAm, F2000 and F1600. The season will wrap up at Summit Point, August 24 – 26, with CCS Motorcycles, F2000 and F1600.

“We are responding to numerous requests from inside the Atlantic community and are pleased to offer this spectacular class of race cars a dedicated series. While the car counts are not currently in the F2000 or F1600 league, we feel there are sufficient enthusiastic teams and drivers that, if offered a compelling program, will respond with their entry and participation,” said Michael Rand, managing director.

“As a five-year competitor in Atlantic, and its immediate predecessor, Formula B, in the dark ages of the early 1970s, I am personally very excited to see this develop in 2012 and beyond,” Rand said.

Formula Race Promotions will bring in dedicated technical staff just for the Atlantic Championship Series, while utilizing the existing Timing and Scoring, Chief Stewards and Registration personnel of the F2000 and F1600 Championships.

All cars will be required to run Hoosier Racing Tires, 13” diameter bias ply or 15” diameter radials. Sizes, compounds and purchase details are to be announced at a later date. Meanwhile, all chassis and motor rules are per the 2012 SCCA GCR.

Registration fees will be $950, and include a permanent number, participation in the points championship, participation in any and all contingency programs that may be instituted, and SCCA Pro Racing driver and crew licenses.

Each event entry fee (double race weekend) will be $1,250.

All events feature two races per weekend, six races in total, and a driver’s best-five results will count toward the 2012 title. Points will be awarded per the established Formula Race Promotions table, as utilized by both F2000 and F1600.

Purses are yet to be announced, but each race winner will receive, at a minimum, the equivalent of the event entry fee in the form of a check or products.

Trophies will be awarded to the top three finishers in each race, plus the top four in the season-ending points, counting the best five of six results.

It is such a rush to stand at the head of these grids. Almost brings a tear to the eye to see them all lined up.

Now we will have a third grid to view.

i think they were just too slow on the trigger with that class Ken.

The bigger question is , is it time to branch out and create a single sportsracer class as well for a combined D/Csr class and start shopping for stand alone weekends.

Great news! What will be the best chassis/engine combination for those three tracks? For that matter, what is the best chassis/engine combination in general under current FA rules?

If this series takes off, I'd love to design a car for it. Formula Atlantic has always been my favorite class.

Based on runoffs results and what engine builders/competitors are willing to say, it is the 014 with the 1.8L AFE motor. I know that other competitors are working on other combinations based on the new tables, but that seems to be the best currently known combination.

That could change at any moment based on the way the engines are teched.

Great idea Kevin! SR's yes please! Get FV involved too. No more SCCA with mixed class racing, Miata's running in 3 different groups, and officials that know nothing about your car. Stand alone weekends would be amazing! Doing two seasons with these guys was some of the best weekends racing we've ever had.

Creating a pro FA Series is actually a public service in the aid of FV drivers throughout the country.

It's one big co-ordinated plan dropped from a black helicopter over Sharon CT. By moving FF, FC, and FA to our Series. Moving the FBs to Jon's series. Moving the FE's to USF2000. And the FMs have their pro series.

With the F500/600 guys imploding on the other thread, it leaves the whole SCCA club run group available to FV to drive around without having to check their mirrors every second.

The FV guys must be toasting us tonight in garages all across the country.

This announcement just made my 2011 holiday season complete. Thank you to Mike Rand and company. Mike was my very first Skip Barber instructor at a wee track in Oklahoma, Hallett, in 1982 (?). Have enjoyed watching his exploits and success from afar since that Barber experience.

I recently commented on the TenTenths forum that the only open-wheel series that has captured my attention are the F2000 and F1600 Championships. Now with FAtlantic I have three series to follow.

if there was an engine that had a greater lifespan (the FA vesion of a zetec) I'd be in an FA no question.
Awww, come on guys, it's so simple. Maybe you need a refresher course. Hey! It's all ball bearings nowadays.

There is... Honda K20. At least 5000 (maybe as high as 10,000) miles instead of 800-1000. But, you won't win with it.

It would revolutionize the class if they would use stock engines that make more than 325 and then restrict them down to some number. It will never happen with the current players (owners, engine builders, etc) that have embedded vested interests. And in the current economy no one is going to step out and create a new class (heaven forbid).

Didn't they already do that and collapse with CART with the 016/Cosworth Mazda? As I recall it was 300bhp at a fairly low stress level. Perhaps not detuned but surely a long life motor when it was announced (compared to the Toyota, of course)

That's the ticket...a reliable engine like the Zetec supported by a class organization like HPD. Why can't you win with it?

The best thing about a pro series like the F1600/F2000CS and now Atlantic Championship Series (ACS? FACS?) is that it is a benevolent dictatorship. If you guys think it's the best thing for the class you can approve any engine you want!

FA is not a spec series , never was. When people monkied with it and made it a spec series it died. So by all mean lets go down that road again.

There is now a very large engine pool to chose from. Do your research and pick th epower plant that best suits your needs. But this aint FF or FC and your needs may not be someone elses and they are free to chose something else.

    ditto Firlein

The majority of those that are involved in the class seem to like it just the way it is. I believe some even enjoy the bragging rights of having the most expensive engine. Sort of like wearing a Rolex on pit lane. It is not a "budget" class. Live with it.
