    Default Rear bearings

My 69 Merlyn's drivers side rear upright bearings need to be replaced.... Does anyone know where to get the bearings.... The uprigjt has "Merlyn" stamped on the side.... I have torn down to only the upright and the bearings that I assume have to be pressed out and the new ones pressed in.....

    Hello Dennis,

When you remove the stub axle, there may be a snap ring/circlip holding the bearing in the upright. Some people make it a bit easier by warming the upright in an oven to about 200F to expand the aluminum and make removal of the bearing easier.

There should be a three or four digit number on the edge of outer race of each bearing. Number should be something on the order of 206 or 6206 and a brand such as FAG or SKF. Your local bearing house can get you a set for a very reasonable price. Sealed both sides is preferred. Less moisture and crap gets in to the bearing.

If you have questions about Merlyns, contact Wes Allen. He is listed in the directory.

Don't put the upright in the oven when your wife is making a roast dinner the fat ruins the finish on the upright.

They are pretty expensive bearings as I remember. Any good bearing house can order them. There is no snap ring holding them in. If you put the uprite in an ovenfor a bit, they will come out easily. Be careful with any type of a press, you can ruin the uprite. I also use a hot plate and heat up the uprite, that works also.

    Dennis,

With the Outside Diameter, Inside Diameter and Width you can usually get the bearing part number. From looking at mine these look like sealed (not shielded) bearings.

Glad they came out easily, haven't done mine yet.
