    Default RT5 Starter.....

My 1980 RT5 uses a Mercedes 190 starter and has a machined aluminum adapter bolted to it..... I am not sure if this is RT5 typical or not...?

    What year is your RT%?

Unfortuntely I don't know the year since I have the engine & Webster gearbox from an RT5 in my vintage Royale CSR I'm restoring. The car was complete except for the starter and my engine guy needs the starter for the dyno runs, and of course, I'll need it too!

One piece of information you may need to have to help you find a starter is the tooth count on the ring gear. Get that from your engine guy, then maybe call Scotty at Taylor-Race.com. I think they helped me years ago.

When my RT5 still had the VW engine & Hewland 5 spd it used a Tilton Super Starter & a simple flat 3/8" aluminum hand fabricated adapter plate. Whatever starter you use make sure it has a bracket for support of the forward end to keep it secure & safety wire the bolts.

I have a starter that was part of the spares package I got with my RT-5. Contact me if interested.

Original RT-5 starters were Bosch as they were series sponsors. Heavy and vibrated themselves to death very quickly. Aftermarket brackets to mount alternate starters were common so be sure you are using the proper bracket for the starter chosen. Superstarters are always good. Many opted for a Toyota type that could be returned to the Zone. Just get the proper mounting bracket that allows the starter to be clocked for your particular installation.

If not too late to reply, I still got 2 such starters; pn 0001- 157023..
my car's originals, both used, one completely rebuilt with new parts.
Original Bosch ( made in Spain), was told they were BMW motorcycle.

    Default Got a Starter!

Thanks to everyone who replied, but Ben Beasley shipped me a new super starter that fits perfectly and was a great price.

    Ricardo,
Did you sell these starters that you offered back in 2010?
    Thanks,

I just looked at the photo that you posted in the past, and the opening in the nose faces the wrong direction for my application. Thanks for responding.

    Default RT-5

No problem, Rusty; did the research and still have them, in case they might serve the purpose to anyone in the thread.
