Well this is rather late but I just found a online PDF for the 1972 GCR http://pdfownersguide.net/view.php?t...NjYS1nY3IucGRm It is edited but most of the important information is there. It does not take much of a read to see how far the Vintage community has drifted from that GCR

Umm, pump gas was different then.... like race gas now, except 100 octane is no longer $0.39/gallon

True - I remember getting gas at Sunoco stations where you could pick the octane by pressing about six different buttons.

Ah yes, Sonoco. Back in my period correct days (period correct driver) out West the hot fuel was Chevron White Pump. One weekend at a National Points race it was discovered that the out of towners brought their own fuel, Sonoco, and it tested at a higher octane than Chevron. Cal Club decided that as that was legal in their home region that they could use it, but not us Cal Clubers. At the time most of us drivers were too technically challenged to know that it produced no extra power and would only do so if the compression were raised to be able to make use of the increased octane. The Chevron was a bit over 100 octane and the Sonoco was maybe a couple of octane above that. There was a good bit of grousing about the "Cheaters from the East". The Irony is that unless the compression were raised to use that extra octane, the power made would in fact be slightly less were we to use the Sonoco.

Heyy Murray...
The white pump was called Chevron Custom Supreme.
Back then that's all we used....at 29 cents a gallon. After "filling up" with 3 bucks worth, we all drove across the street to the liquor store and waited around for someone we might know over 21 to get us a few bottles of Ripple.....35 cents a
bottle.
