    Default Steering rack request

    So I'm getting to taking the rack stops out of my cmod car. Seeing as I'm trying to make as few mistakes as possible, I just have a couple questions on this subject.

    I remember when reading the fsae rules, there was a blurb in there talking about how steering stops are required to "prevent the inversion of a 4 bar linkage system". Now I'm pretty much posistive I understand what this means... but is this something to look into more closely?

    Does anyone have images of how aggressive they got with trimming their rack limiters? Did anyone add some delrin or similar as bushings between the rack and trimmed stops to help protect the rack?

    Also I would love to see some solutions that others have for locking the rack during setup, I have a pretty good idea of how to lock mine but it seems like I'm missing a simpler method.

    And on a side note, are there any cmodder's that have changed their steering ratio?

    For auto-x work on revising the Ackerman, the stock rack ratio will be fine. Is it a front steer or rear steer car?

    depending on the car, there may be other limits to steering lock beyond the rack stops. Stops allow you to not cut down tires, bend suspension, etc. I would look for those natural limits and set the rack stops accordingly. I would look for a lot of castor to get camber and corner weight gain on the outside tire, toe out, and lots of ackerman.

    Thanks for the help everybody, as was said my limit was part of the steering stop contacting the bodywork before the rack so I'll have to trim that down. I didn't think of looking other places first.. I'm always placing too much trust in the original engineering of the car.

    Not sure I follow on your question PCalhoun... can you elaborate?

    Is the steering rack in front of or behind the axle center line?

    Typically a rear steer car will allow greater Ackerman modification, which will aid low speed turn in and minimize tire scrub, allowing the car to roll freer thru the corner. There are exceptions of course, but this is a general rule of thumb when maximizing a FFs auto-x potential.

    Unfortunately it looks to be a front... thanks for that info though I didn't know that term at all.
