    Default Narrow or wide tire combination for FB?

    FC races on 6" front and 8" rear tires with less power, more weight and about the same aero load as an FB.
    Why would an FB car not want to use the same size tires as an FC?
    What are the advantages and disadvantages of using wide or narrow tires on an FB?

    I can only guess that there is a trade off that might cancel out the advantages. My opinion (untested), is that on most tracks the wider tires add as much drag as they gain in grip. And they're heavier.

    Biggest factor for me has been, I have lots of 6" & 8" wheels (and used tires). It would be very costly to change.

    I think the Stohr & Phoenix come with wider wheels, but I'm not positive. I can't remember what the Piper (fastest car to date?) has run on.

    I have an FS, not FB but the same rules of physics apply, I would think. When available I use 7" & 9" on high speed tracks, such as Daytona & switch to 8" & 10" for slower, tighter tracks like Barber. Of course being the cheapest guy in the SEDIV, I never buy new tires so I'm limited to whatever size I can scrounge up! ---

    Default Phoenix Wheels

    The Phoenix cars were delivered with wheels that let you run either a wide or a narrow tire. We (Matt and I) have been testing both wide and narrow when ever we get a chance. So far the car has gone faster with the wide tires at most tracks, but have yet to test at a super fast circuit, so the drag v. grip issue is still unresolved.

    My car was almost always faster with the narrow tires and the wide Jongbloeds are the same weight as the narrow OZs. Hoosier had the same experience in other types of cars.

    Only exception was at Barber or CMP- both tight, lower speed tracks.

    Piper has been running FC tires on 7" and 9" wheels.

    I have a Phoenix F1000 FK1-07. The car can handle the 9.5" rear and 7.5" fronts...also the 10" rears and the 8" fronts.

    I have used both.

    The 7.5" x 9.5" gives a slightly higher ride height. The 8" x 10" tires ( Goodyear Eagles) have a lower ride height and gives me some trouble on the track and loading onto the trailer.

    If it wasn't for the lower ride, I would use the wider 8 x 10's on the Phoenix.

    I haven't found any advantage using either, except personal preference using the wider tire. Wil most likely stick to the 7.5 x 9.5" tires ( Goodyear Eagles ).

    P.S. I buy the 90-95% rubber.......used tires from John Berget....they work very well and the cost is low budget.
